Berkeley Lab’s Biological Systems and Engineering (BSE) Division has an opening for an experienced scientist or engineer to join the Fermentation and Recovery team at the Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Demonstration Unit (ABPDU). This position will support several projects related to integrated production and recovery of advanced biofuels, including biomass pretreatment, fermentation, and recovery/purification unit operations.

Essential to success is the command of a broad spectrum of biochemical and chemical engineering unit operations applicable to advanced biofuel and biochemical production. This individual will perform research activities including scheduling and project management, experimental design, execution of deconstruction unit operations at bench and 100L-scale, execution of processes for bench and pilot-scale fermentation (2 L to 300 L), execution of recovery and purification processes (filtration, centrifugation, distillation, etc.), and execution of associated analytical methods.

What You Will Do:

  • Independently plan and execute process development related tasks at 2L scale, including preparing media, batching bioreactors, calibrating equipment, sampling through the process, and operating real-time sampling and in-line and off-line analytical equipment such as HPLC, Flownamics autosampler, YSI, Gallery, etc.

  • Independently plan and execute experiments for optimization of biomass-to-biofuels processing, including hypothesis generation, experimental design, troubleshooting, and interpretation of key results.

  • Execute biomass deconstruction and fermentation process optimization campaigns at bench and pilot scale.

  • Execute multiple recovery unit operations including centrifugation, liquid-liquid extraction, distillation, condensation, etc.

  • Perform data analysis and prepare presentations to report findings to collaborators and the larger ABPDU team.

  •  Prepare and submit manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Serve as a work lead or supervisor for interns and junior research staff.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Assist with general lab activities such as clean up, waste disposal, purchasing, etc.

What is Required:

  • Knowledge equivalent to bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related areas.

  • 2-5 years’ experience in bioprocess engineering, including experience with both biomass deconstruction and fermentation with both aerobic and anaerobic host organisms.

  • Experience in handling, maintaining, and growing microorganisms during fermentation and recovery/analysis of their products.

  • Experience with downstream processing unit operations, including distillation, liquid-liquid extraction, and solid-liquid separation.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of analytical techniques required for biomanufacturing research and development, including offgas analysis, photometric analysis, GC, and HPLC.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) — Bldg. 978, 5885 Hollis St., 4th floor, Emeryville, CA.
