Berkeley Lab’s Facilities Division has an opening for a Fire Alarm Electrician. You will report to the Supervisor and receives day-to-day direction from the Lead Fire Alarm Electrician.  This position functions as a journey-level fire alarm electrician. You are responsible to operate, inspect, maintain, test, service, troubleshoot, and initiate and coordinate repairs by other crafts as required to maintain the viability of equipment comprising the Laboratory’s fire alarm system, water-based and other suppression systems, including but not limited to automatic and pre-action sprinklers, wet and dry chemical, foam generators, carbon dioxide and halogenated fluorocarbon agents. Also responsible for the installation and modification of fire alarm systems in building offices and research work areas.  

 

What You Will Do:

  • Independently, perform predictive and preventative maintenance inspections, tests and repairs as required by codes and standards as well as site-specific requirements. 

  • Perform sustaining services to the facility as required, including, but not limited to troubleshooting and repairs of doors, smoke dampeners, and other related mechanical equipment.    

  • Test, operate, connect, install, calibrate, adjust, clean, service, replace and repair life safety and fire alarm components and systems comprising the initiating, indicating, signaling and control components.      

  • Update and submit prints to maintain the accuracy of equipment and testing databases.

  • Document and/or regularly update work order status and logs.

  • Complete code required reports and any other applicable codes. 

  • Fabrication of complex electrical and/or fire alarm controls systems and related equipment. 

  • Coordinate both shop and field fabrications of complex electrical and/or control systems and related equipment. Direct the fabrication, placement, and termination of various types of cable assemblies, conductors and wires.

  • Comply with Lab implementation of Department of Energy (DOE) health and safety policies and other applicable Federal, State, and local fire, health, safety, emergency-preparedness, pollution-prevention, and environmental protection policies.

  • Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including but not limited to protective clothing, safety equipment when appropriate.

  • Perform all work safely and be particularly aware of potentially hazardous operations or conditions.

  • Immediately stop work in the event of danger to people or property. Notify your supervisor and, when appropriate, the building manager or the Environmental Safety Hazards Control Department. Report promptly and correct when appropriate any hazardous conditions that are discovered.

  • Proceed with work only after having ensured that appropriate safety procedures have been implemented.

  • Plan work with full consideration of safety.

  • Ensure that all unique activities that involve potentially hazardous conditions are carried out in conformance with current Lab safety policies and procedures to ensure that risks are acceptable.

  • If you are injured, feel pain, or become ill, to immediately report your condition to your supervisor. 

 

What Is Required:

  • Have obtained and maintained NICET Level I certification for Fire Alarm and have the ability to achieve NICET Level II certification for Fire Alarm within a reasonable time. At least 2 years, in field installations and field/shop maintenance and repairs. 

  • 3 years experience troubleshooting, identifying and correcting malfunctions on DC controlled systems.

  • Operational familiarity with fire alarm equipment manufactured by Siemens as well as other manufacturers.

  • Possession of excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and listening skills for working in a diverse team environment, and the ability to clearly communicate over telephone and two-way radio. 

  • Able to read, interpret, and apply prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts, logic diagrams, ladder diagrams, and narrative operational and functional procedure descriptions.

  • Able to use computers effectively for record-keeping and communication; effectively use email, MS Word and MS Excel.

  • Able to use portable and fixed drills, saws, grinders, and sanders; use continuity testers, voltage indicators, DC clamp-on ammeters and multi-meters to measure resistance, amperage and voltage. 

  • Knowledgeable in the usage of benders/cutters/threaders/anchor/fastener tools. 

  • Have a working knowledge of the standards and codes applicable to fire alarm and life safety systems and electrical safe work practices.  

  • Possession of a valid California license.

  • Able to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds, work at heights; work in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, under florescent lights; able to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, manual dexterity in both hands; must use protective clothing, safety equipment, and respirators. Able to lift up to 50 lbs. to chest height (unassisted), and be able to distinguish colors.

  • Must be available to respond to emergencies during off-hours including weekends and holidays.

  • Must be able to perform work in a safe and efficient manner with minimal supervision.

  • Possess a thorough knowledge of work order systems in Maximo and DataSplice.

 

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Have obtained and maintained California fire/life safety certification.

  • NICET Level II certification preferred.  NICET Level III certification highly desirable.

  • Operational familiarity with fire alarm equipment manufactured by Fenwal, Cerberus Pyrotronics,  Notifier, Potter and other commonly utilized fire alarm manufacturers’ equipment. Must have operational familiarity with System 3, MXL, XLS, Vesda and Analaser Systems.  

  • Knowledge of LBL facilities layout, key personnel, procedures governing stores issues, safety program and facilities design requirements.

  • Knowledge of work order systems in Maximo and DataSplice.

  • May work extended workday/week assignments with little to no notice and must be available to respond to emergency call-ins.

Notes: 

  • This is a full time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary: $51.47

  • Salary will be predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements set rates.
