Berkeley Lab’s Relativistic Nuclear Collisions (RNC) program of the Nuclear Science Division has an opening for a High-Energy Physics Postdoctoral Scholar. You will initiate and contribute to physics analyses of the ALICE Experiment focused on ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. The RNC scientists play leading roles in both the ALICE at the LHC and in the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and lead physics analyses aiming at precision measurements of physical properties of Quark-Gluon Plasma at RHIC and the LHC.

What You Will Do:

  • Analysis of ALICE physics data and publication of the results.

  • Report results to supervisor.

  • Publish papers/reports in refereed journals, and make oral presentations of own work.

  • Exercise independent judgment and contribute in an original manner at the professional level.

  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate student assistants in research at LBNL and UC Berkeley.

What Is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. in high-energy physics, or a closely related field.

  • Experience with physics data analysis.

  • Experience with high energy physics software and computing systems.

  • Proficiency in written and oral dissemination of scientific results.

  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration in a research environment.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to advise and coach graduate and undergraduate student assistants in research.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
