Berkeley Lab’s NERSC Division has an opening for a HPC Storage Systems Engineer. Berkeley Lab (LBNL) addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab’s scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) at Berkeley Lab is the production high performance computing and data facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. NERSC serves thousands of scientists from around the world who conduct basic and applied research in fields that support the mission of the Office of Science. Come work at NERSC, and be at the forefront of High Performance Computing while contributing to pioneering science.

NERSC is seeking a talented storage systems administrator with a focus on extreme scale high performance storage. NERSC storage systems provide petabytes of capacity and 100’s of gigabytes a second of bandwidth. In this position, you will work with 8 system engineers and programmers in the Storage Systems Group to help architect, deploy and manage NERSC’s storage hierarchy. This includes an all flash Burst Buffer , multiple Lustre and Spectrum Scale (formerly GPFS) file systems and two HPSS archives. We seek a high performance storage generalist, who has broad knowledge of storage hardware and software technologies including block storage arrays, storage networks, parallel file systems, hierarchical storage systems and object stores.

The position is located at the LBNL main campus situated in the hills above UC Berkeley. If you seek an intellectually challenging storage systems administrator position, and working on a dynamic team, we want to hear from you.

What You Will Do:

  • Help to architect deploy and manage NERSC’s storage hierarchy.

  • Day to day administration of Spectrum Scale and Lustre distributed parallel file systems.

  • Administration of storage servers and block storage arrays.

  • Participate in management of storage area network.

  • Troubleshoot and debug problems in our production storage systems.

  • Define storage requirements for NERSC, ensuring that NERSC users’ needs are represented.

  • Engage with NERSC users to identify projects which will improve data management and movement at the center.

  • Identify and evaluate promising new storage hardware and software technologies.

  • Participate in on-call rotation.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Present technical information at conferences and meetings.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

  • A minimum of six years of systems administration experience.

  • Experience managing storage systems.

  • Experience with an automated software provisioning and configuration management system such as Ansible.

  • Knowledge of typical Unix file system structure.

  • Ability to script in Python, Perl, Shell or other interpreted language.

  • Excellent technical troubleshooting skills.

  • Knowledge of trends in storage system hardware and software.

  • Experience troubleshooting high performance data transfer applications.

  • Strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a creative and diverse team.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience administering or developing Spectrum Scale, Lustre, HPSS or other distributed parallel file system or HSM.

  • Understanding of file system internals, or prior work developing storage systems.

  • Good understanding of data transfer protocols, for example TCP/IP, IB verbs or ROCE.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  • This is a full time career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
