IT Student Assistant
Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source Division (ALS) has an opening for an IT Student Assistant
In this role, you will provide hardware and software support to workstation users at the ALS. This includes basic to intermediate troubleshooting for a variety of desktop operating systems and office software products, imaging and deployment of new systems, hardware diagnostics and troubleshooting, and special projects.
The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 14,000 users annually. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. What You Will Do:
- Assess and resolve user problems involving multiple platforms and architectures.
- Provide support for Macintosh and PC hardware, networking, printing, and interface issues.
- Provide solutions to questions concerning usage of standard desktop software, including system, utility, security, web browsing, antivirus, and office productivity software.
- Perform desktop and mobile email client configurations.
- Image new computers and deliver to the customer.
- Install and troubleshoot PC hardware components.
- Provide hardware and software break/fix support.
What is Required:
- Strong knowledge of and experience installing computer hardware including motherboards, power supplies, video cards, memory, disk drives, and peripheral equipment (typically required for A+ certification).
- Experience with standard desktop operating systems including Windows and macOS.
- Familiarity with laser printers and print job troubleshooting.
- Working knowledge of TCP/IP and other networking protocols.
- Knowledge of basic RAID concepts
- Experience with Windows Active Directory.
- Knowledge of mobile devices (Android and iOS).
- Experience with Google Apps.
- Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to convey technical information through well-written and concise documentation and phone conversations.
- Ability to learn quickly and solve problems independently with proper guidance.
- Ability to lift and carry standard desktop and rack mount PC hardware (up to 50 lbs).

- This is a variable, up to 20 hours per week, 1 year, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
