Berkeley Lab’s Biosciences Area Office has an opening for a Lab Operations Associate. The incumbent will perform various tasks to assist the Emery Station East (ESE) Director of Laboratory Operations achieve the Lab Operations group’s overall goal of providing the service, equipment, and supplies that ESE researchers need to accomplish their research. In addition, the incumbent will maintain and coordinate the ESE microbial seeds, strains, and plasmid collection, including archiving new materials and material transfer of requested materials. The successful candidate will be team-oriented, eagerly collaborate with a large and diverse group of LBNL and external staff, and flourish in a fast-paced and demanding research environment.


What You Will Do:

Laboratory Operations

  • Collaborate with customers to resolve issues related to research operations in the laboratory, communicating progress as appropriate.

  • Interact with ESE staff and outside vendors to acquire goods (including new equipment) and services (including equipment service agreements) for the laboratory. Organize onsite activities by the providers, ensuring they comply with applicable safety policies. Review goods and services delivered by providers to ensure quality and completion.

  • Assist with developing and implementing plans to organize and improve laboratory spaces for optimal use by researchers. Continually track space use, keep space assignments and labeling up to date, and propose and implement changes to meet changing research needs, including the use of all cold and warm stores.

  • Assist with the maintenance of laboratory equipment. Coordinate repair service by LBNL or vendor resources. Help track the status of service agreements for lab instrumentation and aid in decision making on service levels.

  • Assist with developing projects to increase lab safety for employees. Participate in the Building Emergency Team.

  • Complete training from LBNL EHS as an ergonomics advocate. As ergo advocate, provide advice and assistance to JBEI employees on lab and office ergonomic issues, and liaise between JBEI employees and EHS on ergonomic issues.

  • Work with the Laboratory Operations team to create and maintain standard operating procedures for all routine processes performed by the team. Identify and document opportunities to improve processes either through greater efficiency, or higher customer service satisfaction.

  • Assist with preparation for semi-annual building-wide cleanup days.


Strain Archiving

  • Act as custodian of the JBEI Strain Archive, a collection of approximately 10,000 microbial strains unique to JBEI, representing one of JBEI’s most valuable assets.

  • Process a high volume of microbial strain samples from JBEI researchers. Follow standard operating procedures to prepare triplicate freezer stocks for deposition into the JBEI Strains Collection. Collaborate with researchers to ensure that each newly archived strain is correctly documented in the JBEI Registry database, and updated with publication and intellectual property information.

  • Retrieve, grow, and deliver a high volume of strain samples from the archive as requested by JBEI scientists for use in their research. Communicate progress and completion of request fulfillment to scientists.

  • Provide overnight cultures, colony isolates, or comparable source material from the JBEI strain archive for external researchers worldwide.

  • Interact directly with LBNL and UC Berkeley legal staff to prepare and distribute relevant Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs).

  • Communicate clearly with strain requesters and the appropriate LBNL staff regarding the transfer of materials from JBEI.

  • Maintain organized strain transfer documentation, including dates of transfer, shipment tracking numbers, and other data.

  • In collaboration with JBEI principal investigators, informatics, and researchers, develop and implement protocols for microbial strain storage, distribution, and documentation.


What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology preferred and up to 2 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge and microbiology skills such as aseptic technique, bacterial and yeast strain storage protocols, preparation of media with antibiotics, streaking for isolation, and use of laboratory equipment.

  • Ability to work within defined procedures and practices to produce consistent and reproducible results.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Ability to evaluate multiple inputs and prioritize tasks, and achieve outstanding productivity.

  • Ability to work as part of a team; and to work collaboratively with a large and diverse set of customers and service providers.

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills.

  • Attention to detail and careful record keeping.

  • Proficiency in maintaining laboratory notes, reports, and operating procedures.

  • Strong computer skills, especially M.S. Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and web based data systems.

  • Awareness of safety issues in the work environment and basic knowledge of lab and workplace safety requirements.

  • This is a full-time, career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
