Berkeley Lab’s Facilities Division has an opening for a Senior Laborer. Reporting to the Labor Shop Supervisor, this position will perform a variety of construction and maintenance work requiring training and extensive experience, such as operating heavy vehicular equipment for excavation, grading and material movement.


What You Will Do:

  • Operate construction excavation equipment such as D-4 cats, dump trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes and bobcats with attachments.

  • Operate air compressors and pneumatic hammers for chipping concrete and rock for

  • demolitions and excavations.

  • Place and finish concrete for retaining walls, slabs, walkways, floor drains, curbs for general construction projects, remodels and complex structures in support of

  • research projects.

  • Prepare and lay asphalt, concrete for walkways, driveways, roads and curbs.

  • Install, repair and modify chain link fences and gates.

  • Excavate trenches and holes with shovels and hand tools as required to locate existing underground utility lines.

  • Independently select materials, equipment and work methods per established shop guidelines, policies and procedures.

  • Comply with Department of Energy (DOE) health and safety policies and other applicable federal, state, local fire, emergency preparedness, pollution prevention, and environmental protection policies.

  • Consistently apply current Operational Safety Procedures (OSP) to ensure that risks are acceptable for all unique activities involving potentially hazardous conditions.


Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Operate concrete core drill and concrete saw for coring and cutting slabs and walls.


What is Required:

  • Combination of directly related formal and field training/work experience in the operation of general construction earth moving equipment.

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the laborer field; applicable state and federal health and safety code requirements.

  • Experience with maintaining the exterior of a large and complex hillside facility's roads, walkways, storm drains, slide repairs.

  • Experience in the appropriate job site organizations: Storage of materials, minimizing disruptions to others' work, safe and efficient care-taking of tools and equipment.

  • Working knowledge of OSHA requirements and job safety practices.

  • Demonstrated ability to read, write and comprehend written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to clearly communicate both in writing and verbally with supervisor regarding work assignments/safety issues.

  • Demonstrated ability to use computers effectively for record keeping, communication and online training.

  • Must possess a valid (Class C) California driver's license.

  • Must be able to work assignments that may include overtime on weekdays, weekends and holidays


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds and work at various heights.

  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl.

  • Work in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, or under fluorescent lights.

  • Have manual dexterity in both hands.

  • Ability to lift 60 lbs. to chest height.

  • Ability to distinguish colors. 


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Lawrence Berkeley Lab (LBL) facilities layout, key personnel, procedures governing stores issues, safety program and facilities design requirements; All will be required after employment.

  • Experienced in hillside stabilization techniques.

  • Familiar with codes standards.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on collective bargaining agreement step rates.
