Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL) Engineering Division has an exciting opening for a Low-Level RF Electronics Engineer (LLRF) to join our team.


Engineering Department supports programs and projects throughout the prestigious LBNL laboratory and scientific experimental community. Created in 1931,  LBNL is the first National Laboratory and has had 13 Nobel prize winners on its staff. It now employees 4400 scientists, engineers and administrators on a beautiful campus overlooking the San Francisco Bay.


As a member of the RF Engineering section of the Electronics Engineering and Controls Group, you will support the Advanced Light Source (ALS) accelerator complex, a world-class user facility that provides high-intensity photon beams for science. You will perform a variety of Digital Low-Level RF (DLLRF) engineering tasks such as developmental work, simulation, characterization measurements, design/develop subsystems, optimize, tune, operate, maintain and upgrade the RF systems. The DLLRF systems include equipment or systems such as low-noise oscillators, RF signal acquisition, cavity amplitude, and phase controls loops for amplifier systems built with pulsed megawatt klystrons and hundred kilowatt class CW tetrodes, inductive output tubes (IOT), klystrons and solid-state amplifiers in the VHF to S-Band frequency bands. You will work on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.


This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

What You Will Do:

  • Under general supervision for routine work and detailed direction of the RF Lead engineer for new assignments, support the ALS RF systems.

  • Contribute to the hardware design and FPGA firmware development of the LLRF systems. Assist with simulations, characterization measurements, and optimizations.

  • Assist engineers and software developers in the integration of LLRF and RF systems with the accelerator control system.

  • Develop the Human Machine Interfaces for the RF systems, both in the local PLCs and in the accelerator control system.

  • As a member of the RF section assists in the upgrade, repair, and maintenance of following systems:

    • Low phase noise, 500 MHz Master Oscillator and signal distribution system

    • RF Phase and Amplitude Controllers consisting of RF signal acquisition and digital based (FPGA) signal processing

    • PLC and EPICS based controls

  • Assist RF Lead Engineer on RF projects.

  • Assist RF Lead Engineer in identifying and meeting requirements.

  • Provide guidance to technical staff

  • Create and maintain documentation, baseline data, and operating and maintenance procedures.


Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • May work with other scientists and engineers to review and solve technical issues.

  • May provide oversight to other technical staff on specific LLRF projects.

  • Provide input for cost and schedule estimates for sub-projects.

  • May represent the Laboratory to the outside world in RF Engineering through, for example, participation in design reviews, workshops, and meetings.

What is Required:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2   years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.

  • Experience with E-CAD tools for schematic capture, simulation, and design for manufacture.

  • Demonstrated relevant knowledge of electronics engineering concepts, theories, practices, and tools.

  • Working knowledge of microwave theory and measurements, digital signal processing, control theory, and software-defined radio technology.

  • Working knowledge of programming and troubleshooting in Matlab or Python/C/C++, Verilog or VHDL, structured text languages and EPICS control system.

  • Working knowledge of industrial control systems and control algorithms/techniques.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree desired.

  • Working knowledge of beam interaction with accelerating structures.

  • Experience with Xilinx FPGA products based tools preferred.

  • May have knowledge of superconducting RF systems for charged particle accelerators and synchrotron light source physics is preferred.

  • May have experience with Project Data Management (PDM) tools such as Windchill, AutoEDMS, etc.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.
