Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Engineering Division has an immediate opening for a Mechanical Engineering Technician to join the team.

In this role, you will be reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager, under the general guidance of the Physics Division work lead perform broad and varied technical support in the field of mechanical technology. You will perform complex assignments, exercise independent judgment and follow general specifications and work planning methods to achieve desired results. You will apply broad and varied knowledge of mechanical and electro-mechanical theory and practice.

This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

 

What You Will Do

  • Provide technical support by fabricating, assemble, install, set up, operate, test, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, or modify complex mechanical apparatus for the Physics divisions, scientific groups. Including but not limited to, optical systems, vacuum systems, particle detectors, cryogenic equipment and related scientific research apparatus

  • Support the day-to-day operation of the Physics Division machine shop.

  • Ensure that shop safety, equipment maintenance, work scheduling, cost estimating and material procurement.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, parts lists, and assembly diagrams.

  • Exercise independent judgment; follow general specifications, work planning methods machine tooling, equipment, select and utilize standard and non-standard metallic and non-metallic materials, formulations and processes selection to achieve desired results.

  • Perform troubleshooting and repair of complex mechanical equipment.

  • Assist in the design of general mechanical equipment or systems; recommend modifications to engineer designs as required.

  • Document in process and final results of assignments including processes, procedures, tests and standards used and any equipment/system modifications required.

  • Valid California Drivers License.


Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Operate calculators, personal computers or computer terminals to access and/or document information on parts, components and materials or to perform calculations or measurements necessary to accomplish assignments.


What is Required:

  • Substantial technical understanding of mechanical or electro-mechanical theory and work practices, engineering principles, and technical mathematics, typically acquired with 4-6 years of related experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform general set-ups, testing, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, operation and maintenance of complex mechanical, electromechanical and scientific apparatus, equipment and systems.

  • Substantial  experience in assembling, testing and measuring complex mechanical components and equipment using sophisticated measuring and testing tools and equipment

  • Knowledge of and ability to select, set-up and use appropriate hand, power, and machine tools.

  • Ability to maintain and operate the Physics Division machine shop following Engineering and Pub 3000 safety standards and protocols.

  • Ability to successfully accomplish assignments by exercising judgment with general guidance and supervision.

  • Ability to read and correctly interpret complex blueprints, sketches, parts lists, layout and assembly drawings and operation, calibration and repair manuals.

  • Good communication skills.

  • General knowledge of mechanical equipment design procedures and techniques.

  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50-lbs.).


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases and word processors.

  • Experience with the fabrication of advanced silicon tracking detectors and other semiconductor devices.

  • CAD experience.

  • AA degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or the equivalent in formal industrial or military training is preferred.

  • Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
