This is a position for a postdoctoral fellow to join the Nanofabrication Facility at The Molecular Foundry. This is a unique opportunity for world-class research on self-assembly of hybrid organic/inorganic nanomaterials and fabrication at the molecular scale taking advantage of the exceptional interdisciplinary environment of The Molecular Foundry. The successful candidate is expected to work not only within the Nanofabrication facility but across all facilities, in particular with the Organic and Inorganic facilities.


The Molecular Foundry is a national user facility for nanoscale science and is one of five Department of Energy Nanoscale Science Research Centers. The successful candidate will contribute to a multidisciplinary research center at the forefront of nanoscale science, in a unique collaborative and interdisciplinary facility.


What You Will Do:

  • Synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles
  • Ligand exchange
  • Design and test protocols for self-assembly and directed self-assembly
  • Study phase transition mechanisms in 2D and 3D
  • Fabrication of templates and templated structures from the assembled super-lattices utilizing innovative nanolithography techniques.
  • Imaging techniques: SEM, AFM
  • Clean room nanofabrication
  • Collaborate with other research teams and scientists.
  • Publish work in peer-reviewed scientific literature.
  • Present work at national meetings and at regular group meetings.
  • Provide training and guidance to other staff members including undergraduate, Master's and PhD level students.
  • Contribute positively to the active research culture.
  • Perform work in accordance with EH&S guidelines and regulations
  • Support and contribute to the culture of diversity and inclusion.

What Is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Soft-Matter Physics, Materials Science and Engineering, or another discipline relevant to nanofabrication, self-assembly or soft-matter science.
  • Experience with synthesis of colloidal nanoparticles and characterization and purification of colloidal nanoparticles.
  • Safety conscious with a good understanding of positive safety culture.
  • Strong publication record in top-rated scientific journals, with extensive experience in the preparation and handling of scientific manuscripts, reports, and research posters.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary groups.
  • Cleanroom nanofabrication techniques such as lithography, film deposition, reactive ion etching, etc.
  • Knowledge of Materials characterization techniques such as TEM, DLS, TGA, NMR, GPC, HPLC, XRR, GISAXS, ellipsometry, AFM, SEM.
  • Experience with organic synthesis or polymer synthesis.
  • Experience with Polymer/Soft-Matter Physics
  • Directed self-assembly
  • Image processing experience
  • Experience with Programming languages (Python, Mathematica or Matlab)
  • Capable of working in a diverse environment with scientists from all over the world.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Notes
:

  • This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 3 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
