Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Software Engineering Group is looking for a software engineer with an interest in networking to help develop a user configurable, automation centric, wide area network services platform used to facilitate collaboration on some of the world's most important scientific challenges in energy, climate science and the origins of the universe.  This position will work on a geographically diverse and interdisciplinary team of software, network and systems engineers to develop and maintain robust software and solutions. The engineer will perform software development, implementation, testing and operational support for the production quality software underlying the current and next generation ESnet network.


What You Will Do:

  • Participate on interdisciplinary teams in designing, implementing, and testing production quality software underlying the current and next generation ESnet network services.

  • Participate in and/or lead project teams to successfully develop and complete project scopes, on time and within project budgets. May lead/participate in architecture initiatives for software infrastructure and service solutions.

  • Use understanding of current development technologies and programming; independently design and implement software projects, including internal and external documentation.

  • Recommend and lead implementation and deployment efforts for software improvements that enhance reliability, stability, usability, performance and security.

  • Mentor and provide work lead direction to summer students and less experienced software engineers.

  • Troubleshoot and solve complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.


What is Required for the Software Engineer level 3:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8 years of related experience; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent experience.

  • Demonstrated experience with software development lifecycle and methodologies such as Agile.

  • Demonstrable experience in server side Linux-based software development:

    • software version control using git or similar

    • use of Linux and related development ecosystem

    • web service technologies such as REST, gRPC and graphQL

    • stability and performance troubleshooting

    • design, develop and test effective software solutions using Python, Go or similar language

  • Experience with Automation tools such as Cisco NSO, Ansible, Puppet, Chef, etc.

  • Experience with streaming message systems such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.

  • Solid understanding of system and network security fundamentals.

  • Linux system administration.

  • Wide Area Networking concepts and protocols.

  • Web UI development using JS, React, CSS and other associated technologies.

In addition to the above, the Software Engineer level 4 will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 12 years of related experience; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Wide Area Network Engineering or Operations.

  • Web development using JS, React, CSS and associated technologies.

  • Solid understanding of system and network security fundamentals.

  • Web UI development using JS, React, CSS and other associated technologies.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
