Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opening for a Network Engineer in Berkeley, CA.

 

Configure, troubleshoot, and provide analysis of network protocols including IPv4 and IPv6, BGP, OSPF, ISIS, RSVP, LDP and advanced IP network services including IP transit and MPLS-based VPNs. Design, implement, and troubleshoot automation services, commercial and in-house developed, and integrate them with ESnet’s Information Architecture. Provide consulting to ESnet users, ESnet site coordinators, and engineering and operations teams at peer Research and Education (R&E) networks and Regional Optical Networks (RONs). Gather network requirements and contribute to developing network designs and services to meet requirements. Contribute to design of optical DWDM transport networks supporting 40G, 100G and higher speed connections. Collaborate with researchers, laboratory site personnel, vendors, and commercial service providers to solve customers’ network performance issues. Independently carry out on-call support at tier 2 level. Other duties as assigned in support of ESnet's operations and research activities. Some travel may be required

 

REQUIREMENTS: Master’s in software engineering, computer science, telecommunications & networking or related technical field and 2 years of experience in job offered or network engineering related occupation. Alternatively, will accept Bachelor’s in software engineering, computer science, telecommunications & networking or related technical field and 5 years progressive post-baccalaureate experience in job offered or network engineering related occupation.

 

Position requires 2 years experience in the following if have Masters (or 5 years experience in the following if have Bachelor’s):

 

1. IP networking experience, in a WAN  or LAN environment.

2. Router and switch configurations for Brocade, Dell equipment

3. Experience configuring, troubleshooting, and using IPv4/IPv6 routing protocols, preferably BGP and IS-IS

4. SONET network fundamentals and experience in configuration and operation of SONET.

5. Experience with a UNIX command line environment, including ssh management of systems, cron, NFS, etc.

6. Experience in contributing to technical project scope, schedule and budget.

7. IP Traffic Engineering (TE) in order to manage network traffic flows and provision multi-domain virtual circuits supporting large scale scientific experiments.

8. Network configuration archiving systems such as RANCID

 

Position requires coursework, project, internship or thesis with:

9. Developing software and coding in Python or Java
