Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Scientific Networking Division has an opening for a Network Operations Manager to join the team.

The ESnet Network Operations Manager will shape our future and support our scientific mission by shaping the future of our network operations.  

The high-speed, advanced ESnet network has become an increasingly critical ingredient for scientific discovery, as science becomes ever more data-intensive and collaborative.  Ensuring the availability and performance of this network is crucial.  

In this exciting role, you will help ESnet’s scientific mission by defining the future of our network operations center, using a service-oriented approach and a shift towards operations automation to provide world-class availability and communications on service operations to the ESnet community. 

You will lead the team of Network Operations staff, work with existing and new external partners, develop standard operating procedures, key operational metrics, and a continuous improvement approach. As a member of the Network Services leadership team, You will collaborate with other leaders to develop and implement Network Services-wide vision, strategies, plans and programs.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Help to define and drive the ESnet operations strategy, moving toward a more automated and service-oriented approach.
  • Lead ESnet’s Network Operations Center (NOC), responsible for day-to-day NOC management, ensures all shifts are staffed for 24x7x365 operational support (including any sourced NOC services) .
  • Lead the development of NOC operational processes and ensure consistent execution, covering: Incident Management, Problem Management, Planned and Unplanned Outage processes, etc. Provide technical guidance to NOC staff; work with NOC staff to prioritize work, identify activities to be completed as time allows.
  • Plan for appropriate team staffing needs. Recruit, train, support, and coach the NOC staff.
  • Work with technical NOC staff to continuous improve NOC-related tools and automation.
  • Participate in technical vendor management from an operational perspective.

 

What is Required:

  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business or related field, and progressively complex and currently applicable expertise in operating complex IT systems (preferably advanced WAN networks), plus three (3) years of experience in a managerial role of a complex computer systems or networking unit.
  • Experience building and leading high performing operations teams in a 24x7x365 environment, with a focus on continuous improvement and metric-driven operations performance management.
  • Knowledge and experience guiding operational procedures and operational automation tools.
  • Experience developing and managing service-oriented operations. 
  • Ability to collaborate across multiple stakeholders in developing network operations processes, automation tools, and service strategies
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing network operations standard practices, and performance metrics.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral. Demonstrated successful collaboration skills and experience as a team member and a team leader.
  • Demonstrated experience in hiring, training, and mentoring technical operations staff.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
