Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Scientific Networking Division has an opening for a Network Services Software Engineer to join ESnet to work with the Testbed and Prototypes team. The Testbeds and Prototypes team is a group of engineers and scientists that create novel prototype network services to support the future of science data movement between the Department of Energy (DOE) and partner facilities across the globe. 

 

In this exciting role, you will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of external and internal participants to create and evaluate new technologies, prototype services and solutions, and work to transition these prototypes into production.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Work on an interdisciplinary team designing, implementing software systems. 
  • Develop and present demonstrations.
  • Attend workshops and conferences. 
  • Mentor and provide work-lead direction to summer students and less experienced software engineers. 
  • Troubleshoot and solve complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.

 

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Ability to work with multiple groups and multiple projects simultaneously.

 

What is Required:

  • Requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent experience.
  • Experience developing with Java and Python languages.
  • Experience developing real-world software stack running on Linux.
  • Experience with collaborative software engineering processes and tools. 
  • Basic experience with cloud and cloud native environment.
  • Understanding modern software and web application architectures and design principles.
  • Understanding of TCP/IP and networking.
  • Experience working in collaboration with multiple teams and/or institutions.
  • Experience with software testing and maintenance.
  • Basic experience with Linux administration and shell scripting.

  • Ability to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  • Ability to network and collaborate with key contacts outside their own area of expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a cross-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to work with multiple groups and multiple projects simultaneously.

This full salary range of this position is between $10,307 to $17,393 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $11,595 to $14,172 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Notes:

  • This is a full time 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • This position has the option of working remotely. Work must be  performed within the United States.
