Berkeley Lab’s Facilities Division has an opening for an Outage Manager.


The Outage Manager is a focal role for Berkeley Lab, with accountability for driving consistent outage planning and execution, and the adoption of best practices. This individual will work closely with the Facility Area Managers, Project Managers, Construction Managers, Maintenance, Engineering, Site planning, Stakeholders, and other resources to ensure risks are managed and outages are planned, scheduled, and executed in a timely and efficient manner.


What You Will Do:

  • Plan, organize, and lead the execution of maintenance outages including outages for regular maintenance (e.g. annual outages, repairs, preventive maintenance) and projects (e.g. facility/utility modifications and upgrades).

  • Coordinate with Facility Area Managers, Project Managers, and Construction Managers, and stakeholders to develop outage scope, execution plan, schedule, resource requirements, permit applications, commissioning plan, pre-job briefings, documentation, and close-out.

  • Manage the execution of maintenance and project outages (electrical, gas, air, water, etc.) to ensure they are well coordinated with all stakeholders to ensure overall safety, minimize impact to operations/science, and optimize the outage window.

  • Assemble, charter, and document roles and responsibilities of an outage management team consisting of representatives from key scientific and support organizations to ensure outages are well communicated and risks are identified and mitigated.

  • Review feasibility studies, cost estimates, risk analysis, design and other supporting documents.

  • Maintain and communicate a master schedule of planned outages and manage/coordinate outages to minimize impact to operations while meeting project milestones and deliverables.

  • Provide leadership and influence in the continuous development of outage management tools and processes through leveraging best practices and lessons learned.


What is Required:

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in Outage Management or related technical field such as preventive/corrective maintenance planning and execution.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience of maintenance, start-up, operations & shut-downs.

  • Solid understanding and knowledge of project management principles and practices.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to provide and present timely and relevant feedback/reporting to various stakeholders.

  • Proficient understanding of mechanical discipline drawings including P&IDs, piping isometrics, general arrangements, mechanical system drawings.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of PC-based computer systems and software applications with an emphasis on Microsoft Excel, Word, and Project.

  • Experience in interfacing with contract craft personnel and equipment manufacturer field representatives.

  • Working knowledge of safety, health, and environmental requirements.

  • Must possess a high level of attention to detail, problem-solving skills, good judgment and decision-making abilities.


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation recognized by PEO or equivalent is preferred. 

  • Planning and scheduling experience using Primavera or similar software is preferred.
