Berkeley Lab’s Material Sciences Division has an immediate opening for a Photolithography Materials Processing Senior Research Technician. The successful candidate will provide multi-functional technician support at a photolithography materials research center used to advance the state-of-the-art in computer chip manufacturing capabilities.

At the Materials Sciences Division, we advance the fundamental science of materials within the context of global energy-related challenges. We develop experimental and theoretical techniques to design, discover, and understand new materials and phenomena at multiple time and length scales. Through our core programs and research centers, we cultivate a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to materials research and help train the next generation of materials scientists.

What You Will Do:

  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain:

    • commercial semiconductor wafer processing track

    • commercial semiconductor processing equipment (prime, spin-coat, develop hot plate),

    • vacuum systems,

    • optical microscopes,

    • scanning electron microscopes,

    • ellipsometers /  film thickness measurement systems

  • Synthesize, handle, and dispose chemicals; clean and dry chemical glassware

  • Ship, receive, purchase, and manage inventory of chemicals and consumables (wafers, wafer containers, chemicals, and personal protective equipment)

  • Create many (e.g., 45) unique experimental samples using chemicals and commercial semiconductor processing equipment / track, each matching a unique specified recipe/prescription, with infrequent error.

  • Acquire scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of patterned photoresist samples.  Use SEM images to provide accurate feedback to the operator of a photolithography instrument on how well focused and exposed the patterned samples are.  For example, if patterned samples are out of focus or over/under exposed, you are expected to be able to figure out how much, and help the operator of the lithography system make appropriate adjustments.

  • Provide exemplary customer service to an international scientific user community, guiding and supporting both onsite and offsite users to successfully accomplish scientific objectives.

  • Analyze data, uncover trends in data, and make sound, data-based decisions.

  • Learn related technical / scientific concepts and vocabulary.

  • Communicate all related technical / scientific concepts, processes, and methods to customers, co-workers, and management accurately, clearly, and with correct / established terminology.

  • Identify anomalous experimental data or instrument behavior, determine the cause, fix the problem and restore the status quo.

  • Collect and monitor data related to equipment and systems performance and effectively communicate related information with a high level of scientific and technical proficiency.

  • Identify deficiencies in established processes/techniques and propose refinements that improve efficiency, improve quality, reduce waste or reduce costs.

  • Display a positive, friendly, can-do, attitude in interactions with customers, co-workers, and management.

  • Keep all workspaces, laboratories, and offices clean and organized.

  • Train / teach co-workers and / or customers, as needed, about related instrumentation, concepts, processes, and methods, with patience and rigor.

  • Work safely and in compliance with lab processes and procedures for personal, environmental, and equipment health / safety

What is Required:

  • Two years of experience practicing a technical or scientific discipline, for example: complex data collection, operation of a technical instrument, chemistry laboratory techniques, or molecular biology techniques.

  • Ability to understand instructions regarding scientific procedures and then carry out those instructions without supervision.

  • Proficiency in the following areas:

    • Operation of scientific / technical instrumentation

    • Scientific / technical communication (written and oral)

    • Process-oriented tasks (i.e., manufacturing, synthesis, or testing).

    • Customer service

    • Data analysis

    • Process optimization

    • Development of new processes or methods

  • Familiar with standard office software (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Adobe Acrobat)

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with commercial semiconductor processing equipment

  • Experience working with chemicals and familiarity with basic chemistry techniques and equipment

  • Proficiency with cameras / photography and related concepts (depth of field, f#, numerical aperture, exposure, ISO, etc.)

  • Darkroom experience.

  • Analytical and technical skills in optics, vacuum systems, and electronics.

  • Experience writing code

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on August 16, 2019.
