Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Facilities Division has an opening for a Plant Maintenance Tech Lead (PMT Lead) to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will be responsible for overseeing work for assigned personnel, by assigning daily work, conducting pre-job safety briefs, inspecting work to ensure standards have been met, and adhere to a weekly schedule. You are responsible for ensuring all Laboratory policies, procedures, and safety requirements are met. You may be responsible to attend various meetings in the absence of the Supervisor and will be responsible for providing line management with input on performance appraisals and the development of skills of assigned staff. You will need to interpret and translate job requirements into specific assignments and will be required to work independently to identify and solve problems; develop, evaluate and implement alternative solutions. You will be expected to conduct walk jobs and interact with other Facilities Personnel, which may include Planners and Facilities Area Managers (FAMs) in order to provide a high level of technical expertise as well as provide quotes for material(s) needed to perform work. You will assign and perform work using engineered/designed blueprints as well as verbal instructions and sketches received from scientific staff and work planning and control personnel. As a Lead, you will be responsible for ensuring that the Turnover Log is updated at the end of each shift with pertinent information and effectively communicated between shift leads and supervisors.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Assign daily work to employees from Akwire to DataSplice.
  • Perform pre-job and safety briefings and go over all hazards at the job site.
  • Report any and all hazards that may stop a job on your pre-job briefing walk.
  • Obtain quotes for material needed and forward to the Planners and FAMs to order.
  • Communicate with other crafts to facilitate jobs.
  • Be able to shift focus through different complex work situations dealing with planning and available resources.
  • Interact with Facilities Area Managers, Planners, Research Community, Contractors, Vendors, Engineering, Project Management and EH&S to provide a high level of technical expertise.
  • Utilizing extensive technical expertise in the performance of maintenance and operation assignments. Inspect, test, evaluate, and maintain the operation of critical equipment and systems in order to provide a safe and reliable facility infrastructure to the research and support community.
  • Monitor and operate our Building Automation Systems. Take appropriate action when alarms come in.
  • Comply with LBNL implementation of health and safety policies, procedures and other applicable Federal, State, and local fire, health, safety, and environmental-protection policies.

 

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Independently operate, maintain and repair low and high pressure boilers, pneumatic and low voltage electrical controls, air handling, vacuum, pressurized gas, heating, and chilling water systems.
  • Perform various preventive or corrective maintenance tasks on a wide variety of fixed and portable equipment, including but not limited to, engine driven generators, operating equipment hydraulics, non-electric utility services systems.
  • Fabricate unique components using commonly available hand and/or machine tools.

 

What is Required:

  • In addition to meeting the minimum requirements for Plant Maintenance Technicians Specialist, incumbents must have a minimum of four years of work experience in the field of maintenance, plant operations, installation, or fabrication and/or completion of a recognized four year apprenticeship program in plant maintenance and/or completion of an accredited two-year program with three years of work experience, or an equivalent combination of documentable military or industrial training and work experience.
  • Able to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds, work at heights, in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, under florescent and other artificial lighting, able to bend, stoop, kneel, and crawl. Must have manual dexterity in both hands. Distinguish colors adequately to utilize color-coding. Able to communicate clearly over telephone and two way radio.
  • Must understand working in an union environment.
  • Must have a valid California Driver's License.
  • Ability to use computers effectively for record keeping and communication. Ability to write intelligible and presentable reports.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of LBNL Facilities layout, operations, key personnel, procedures governing procurements, safety programs, and facilities design requirements.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements set rates.
