Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Foundry offers an exciting Postdoctoral position to work in the area of high throughput synthesis of polymers. The candidate will explore automated synthesis of structurally defined polymers using a suite of synthesis and characterization tools to establish a machine-learning guided high throughput discovery workflow. The candidate will work in the Organic and Macromolecular Synthesis Facility of the Molecular Foundry, one of the nation’s five Nanoscale Science Research Centers.

What You Will Do:

  • Plan and perform experiments for the development of a library of monomers for automated solid-state polymerization.
  • Implement automation in high throughput synthesis and screening of crystalline polymers.
  • Structural characterization of polymer crystals using high throughput characterization techniques such as X-ray and microelectron diffractions.
  • Work in a highly collaborative team to help establish a machine-learning augmented workflow through digitalization of input and output parameters.
  • Communicate research progress within the group and report results externally through conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Follow and promote all safety requirements in the Molecular Foundry

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. (within the last five years) in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Small molecule and polymer synthesis experience is required.
  • Structural resolution using X-ray diffraction or transmission electron microscope is strongly desired.
  • Experience in high throughput synthesis and/or machine learning is a plus.
  • Critical analysis and communication skills should be demonstrated through research publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, two-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than three years of paid postdoctoral experience.
  • Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Berkeley Lab is committed to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accountability (IDEA) and strives to hire individuals from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives who share these same values and commitments.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
