Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Molecular Biophysics & Integrated Bioimaging Division has an opening for a Postdoc for X-Ray Spectroscopy to join the team.

 

In this exciting role, you will study primarily solid/liquid and some solid/gas electrochemical interfaces. The experimental research focus will be on the fundamental understanding of interfacial electrochemical processes using X-ray spectroscopy techniques, including ambient pressure X-ray spectroscopy (APXPS) and soft X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy at Advanced Light Sources (ALS) in LBNL, and hard X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy at Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL).  The types of systems we plan to explore will be oxygen reduction (ORR) catalysts, as well as other selected systems.  You will work closely with scientists at Toyota Research Institute (TRI) in Los Altos, CA.  TRI has expertise in Machine Learning, and our goal is to apply ML capabilities to analyze data and extract descriptors that determine catalytic behavior using X-ray spectroscopic fingerprints. 

 

This unique position will have opportunities to expand candidate’s skills to utilize ML/AI for fundamental

research and make connection with material discovery research at industries.

 
 

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct in situ/operando soft and hard X-ray spectroscopy methods for metal-oxide based ORR catalysts.
  • Collaborate with TRI scientists for basic data interpretation and analysis using Python.
  • Utilize and advance experimental techniques, for example, synchrotron-based or lab-based X-ray measurements and other characterization tools to probe chemistry.
  • Participate in weekly and biweekly meetings and seminars. 
  • Collaborate and work in teams of scientists from diverse backgrounds and play a key role in merging efforts that span electrochemistry, characterization, and theory.
  • Publish original research in peer-reviewed journals; contribute to scientific publications; present research through talks and posters at conferences, workshops, and multi-investigator meetings.
  • Uphold a culture of safety and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

 

 

 What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or other related fields with electrochemistry and/or spectroscopy research focus. 
  • Strong background in X-ray spectroscopy, in particular soft X-ray methods such as XAS and XES, and ambient pressure XPS.
  • Strong background in electrochemical measurements.
  • Basic programming skills with Python.
  • Good motivation to work in a team with people from various backgrounds and research topics effectively.
  • Ability to work independently in developing electrochemical systems for in situ and operando spectroscopy measurements. 
  • Creative and independent problem solver with a track record of tackling research projects from initiation to meaningful conclusions.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work in teams and collaborate with researchers of various backgrounds.
  • Proven ability to publish research in scientific/technical journals supported by a strong publication record.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

 

 

 Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chambers.

 

 

 Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
