Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL), Biological Systems and Engineering Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will be part of the Biofuels and Bioproducts Division of the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) that focuses on metabolic engineering of microbial biofuel production. Specifically, this position will be involved in using genetically engineered yeast (S. cerevisiae and/or R. toruloides) and metabolic pathways to achieve improved isoprenoid biofuel production both in small and large scale, and improved host properties such as enhanced resistance to toxic byproducts and utilization of various carbon sources. This position will also use a variety of tools such as synthetic biology, advanced cloning technology, product analysis (LC/MS, GC/MS), protein engineering, and fermentation.

What You Will Do:

  • Perform and analyze metabolic engineering experiments for biofuel production.
  • Develop an improved biofuel producing strain – host engineering, transcription and translation engineering, fuel-tolerant strain engineering.
  • Perform biofuel production experiments both in small flask scale to 2-L fermenter scale.
  • Develop methods to assay for increase in specific production of fuel.
  • Prepare progress reports to the project funding agency and prepare manuscripts for the publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Prepare and assist with the development of funding proposals and patents.
  • Participate in group meetings and seminars.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed scientific logbook of all experiments performed and ensure that others can duplicate results.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or related areas.
  • Experience with molecular biology and engineering on yeast. (S. cerevisiae and/or other yeast species)
  • Experience with analytical tools such as HPLC and GC.
  • Experience with bioreactors.
  • Experience with protein engineering and enzyme kinetics.
  • Ability to work with guidance of principal investigator and collaborators.
  • Ability to conduct experiments independently, maintain appropriate records and manage data.
  • Experience with scientific journal writing submissions and ability to write above average reviews and articles for submission.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in chemistry lab such as extraction, solvent distillation, and column purification
  • Genome scale informatics.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to write grant proposals and establish independent funding.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at Berkeley Lab. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. Successful candidates for our faculty positions will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Joint BioEnergy Institute - Bldg. 978, 5885 Hollis St., 4th floor, Emeryville, CA

Biological Systems and Engineering Division

Vision: To lead efforts that combine the power of biology with the tools of engineering to develop sustainable energy and biomanufacturing solutions and improve human health.

Mission: Advance a mechanistic and predictive understanding of complex biological systems over multiple scales in terms of their responses to manipulation, stress, disease and environmental challenges and translate this knowledge using engineering principles to develop resilient systems, tools, and processes for the efficient production of fuels, chemicals, materials, tissues, and therapeutics.

The Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Research Center dedicated to developing advanced biofuels—liquid fuels derived from the solar energy stored in plant biomass that can replace gasoline, diesel and jet fuels.archers from industry, national laboratories, and academia to optimize and scale technologies and enable the commercialization of bio-based chemicals, materials, and fuels.
