Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's (LBNL) Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an immediate and exciting opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow.

Yo will perform work within the Berkeley Center for Magnet Technology (BCMT) as a key member of a team consisting of physicists, engineers, technologists and students.  You will support BCMT research and projects in the development of a) cryogenic electronics for detectors, b) novel magnetic measurement systems and diagnostics, and c) magnet test facility capabilities for advanced hybrid low-temperature and high-temperature superconductor-based accelerator magnets. You will furthermore be expected to contribute to the development and testing of novel advanced magnet systems.

What You Will Do:

  • Work on advanced electronics and diagnostics in support of BCMT research programs and projects. Work closely with magnet designers to develop and implement novel measurement, diagnostic, and magnet instrumentation to advance the program’s testing capabilities.

  • Participate in the development and testing of novel advanced magnet systems. Contribute to magnet test planning, execution, and data analysis.

  • Participate in magnet projects and research, taking responsibility for specific project tasks with milestones and deliverables. Work closely with project lead to identify critical tasks and produce results on schedule.

  • Work with cross-divisional groups to advance cryogenic electronics for Nuclear Physics and Physics programs, including electronics design/specification and component testing and characterization.

  • Conduct original research independently and in collaborations.

  • Document findings, procedures and results from the research, development, and test. Present results at collaboration meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences and publish in refereed journals.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Participate in maintenance and operations of the magnet test facility.

  • Mentor students.

What is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. degree in physics or related field.

  • Demonstrated publication record in a relevant technical field and demonstration of proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong knowledge of electronics, data acquisition, and data analysis and synthesis.

  • Experience in designing and implementing hardware for scientific experiments at cryogenic temperatures.

  • Strong background in advanced mathematics for physics and in electromagnetism.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with superconductivity and the properties of superconducting materials.

  • Experience in controls, and in FPGA system design and programming.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 2- year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
