Berkeley Lab’s Nuclear Science Division (NS) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join their Nuclear Structure Group.

 

In this role, you will conduct research in the area of the nuclear structure of exotic nuclei, development and characterization of next-generation detector systems for nuclear structure and/or aspects of the nuclear structure of the heaviest elements.  Additionally, you will initiate research and contribute to the ongoing programs of the group.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Perform analysis of experimental data for complex nuclear structure experiments with stable and radioactive beams.

  • Develop data analysis tools and algorithms as necessary.

  • Perform simulations to benchmark experimental results and prepare future proposals.

  • Prepare and publish manuscripts of experimental results.

  • Participate in the ongoing efforts toward gamma-ray tracking and related detector development.


What Is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or a related discipline within the last 3 years.

  • Expertise in experimental analysis of complex data sets.

  • Knowledge of gamma-ray spectroscopy and particle detection techniques

  • Experience with data analysis and computer programming in C/C++/Python, and ideally familiarity with ROOT and Geant4.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform research individually and as part of a research group.

  • Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient dissemination of scientific results.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
