The Nuclear Science Division (NSD) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher, with focus on the application of machine learning techniques to address the challenges of optimization of the world-leading gamma-ray spectrometer, GRETA and the superconducting ECR ion source VENUS.

What You Will Do:

  • Collaborate with scientists, technicians, and engineers, become familiar with the safe operation and basic scientific principles of both GRETA and VENUS.

  • Participate in the development of a toolchain which optimizes the fidelity of GRETA detector simulations with machine learning techniques using large experimental data sets.

  • Participate in the development of a machine learning framework that will allow for the computer-driven control and analysis of GRETA and VENUS. This framework will be made generalizable enough to be applied to other Department of Energy accelerator-related systems.

  • Develop, test, and optimize machine learning frameworks so they may be used reliably, with a focus on the GRETA signal decomposition task.

  • Present results at collaboration meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences and publish in refereed journals.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • May mentor graduate or undergraduate students.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Machine Learning, Computer Science or related discipline within the last three years.

  • Experience with data analysis and computer programming in Python and/or C/C++, and a familiarity with machine learning techniques.

  • A demonstrated ability to perform research individually and as part of a research group.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience handling large data sets.
