Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Foundry Division has multiple immediate openings for Postdoctoral Scholars to join the Molecular Foundry Nanofabrication Facility and Imaging and Manipulation Facility, one of five Department of Energy Nanoscale Science Research Centers. The successful candidates will be working with multidisciplinary teams to understand the control fundamental decoherence processes in superconducting quantum circuits. We are seeking creative researchers with experience in:

  • advanced materials characterization (scanning probe and electron microscopy, electron and optical spectroscopy, cryo-transport measurements)

  • advanced materials synthesis (atomic layer deposition, binary and ternary nitrides, reactive sputtering)

  • advanced fabrication methods (nanolithography, reactive ion etching, 3D integration, process development).

This is an opportunity to contribute to a vibrant research community dedicated to doing excellent science to a supportive and inclusive environment. In these positions, successful candidates will contribute to multidisciplinary research in a vibrant community dedicated to excellence in nanoscale science. They will be able to perform world-class research programs taking advantage of this collaborative and interdisciplinary facility.

What You Will Do:

  • Performs work on quantum Information science using surface and bulk analysis techniques.

  • Participate in the processes of fabrication (lithography, etching and deposition), characterization of the devices and material properties during those processes

  • Perform measurements and analysis of materials and devices produced in the nanofabrication facility and correlates those with the final properties of the qbits device.

  • Participates in the configuration and installation of a new integrated cluster tool to perform operations.

  • Participate in the cryogenic measurement of the final device.

  • Analyze the properties of materials and devices during the fabrication process of superconductive qbits to understand the de-coherence processes of the quantum states.

  • Performs optimization of the fabrication processes to increase the coherence properties of superconductive qbit devices.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering, or another discipline relevant to nanofabrication, nanotechnology and nanoscience.

  • Experience with the processes of characterization of new materials and correlate them with device properties

  • Experience with the processes of fabrication (lithography, etching and deposition), characterization of the devices and material properties during those processes as well as to take part of the configuration and installation of a new tools to perform those operations.

  • Experience with configuration and installation of a new tools for deposition, etching and characterization.

  • Experience with the characterization measurements and cryogenic measurements.

  • Strong publication record in top-rated scientific journals, with extensive experience in the preparation and handling of scientific manuscripts, reports, and research posters.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary groups.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong background in nanofabrication, and material science basic characterization techniques; basic knowledge of quantum Information science.

  • Strong background in material science basic characterization techniques; basic knowledge of quantum Information science.

  • Experience with optimization of the fabrication processes to increase the coherence properties of superconductive qbit devices.

  • Prior interaction with a wide and diverse range of scientists from all over the world.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 2-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
