Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Energy Storage & Distributed Resources Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will work with Principal Investigators (PIs) in the Energy Storage and Distributed Resources Division, the Advanced Light Source, and Rivian to understand interfacial processes in electrochemical cells containing candidate electrode and solid electrolyte materials. You will use various depth-profiling synchrotron techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, as well as standard laboratory techniques to understand what limits performance in cells.

What You Will Do:

  • Fabricate cell components and coin cells.
  • Cycle cells under a variety of conditions and analyze data.
  • Characterize materials using standard laboratory techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.
  • Use diagnostic techniques to understand failure mechanisms.
  • Write general user proposals for time at synchrotron facilities including the Advanced Light Source and Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource.
  • Conduct experiments at synchrotron facilities.
  • Interact with PIs at LBNL and at Rivian.
  • Write reports and papers for peer-reviewed journals.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Participate in professional society activities.
  • Design in operando experiments at synchrotron facilities.
  • Present results at conferences.

What is Required:

  • Recent PhD in Chemistry, Materials Sciences, Chemical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience characterizing battery materials, particularly those used in all solid-state lithium or lithium-ion batteries.
  • Experience fabricating electrodes and assembling and testing coin cells.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a team of scientists from a variety of backgrounds.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with synchrotron facilities.
  • Experience with in operando measurements.
  • Knowledge of polymer electrolytes.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
