Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Nuclear Science Division (NSD) has an opening for a Heavy Element Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.

In this role, you will conduct experimental research studying the chemical properties of the heaviest elements using nuclear physics techniques. These experiments will be performed at the 88-inch cyclotron facility utilizing the Berkeley Gas-filled Separator (BGS) and FIONA devices to help determine the placement of these elusive elements on the periodic table.

As a member of the NSD Heavy Element program, you will contribute to a dynamic and collaborative research team, actively engaging in studying both the physics and chemistry of these exotic systems. You will also contribute to our efforts towards potentially discovering a new element. Our team is young, energetic, and open to innovative ideas, making it an exciting environment for exploration and discovery.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct experiments to investigate the chemical properties of heavy elements
  • Learn how to maintain and operate the BGS and FIONA experimental devices
  • Develop data analysis tools and algorithms; perform analysis of experimental data
  • Participate in heavy element experiments at the 88-Inch Cyclotron
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, other postdoctoral scholars, technicians, and students.
  • Document and communicate results of work in peer-reviewed-journal publications and in oral presentations, including participation in meetings, conferences, and reviews.

What is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D in Nuclear Physics/Chemistry/Engineering or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic chemistry.
  • Demonstrated skills in computer programming and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience with ion trapping and/or decay spectroscopy.
  • A demonstrated ability to perform research individually and as part of a research group.
  • Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $5,562 - $6,670 and is expected to start at $6,317 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
