Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Biophysics & Integrated Bioimaging Division has an opening for a Protein Biochemist Postdoctoral Scholar. The successful candidate  will work in the Davies/Savage lab to determine the structure/function relationship of membrane proteins involved in CO2 uptake. The primary targets include the CUPS proteins of cyanobacteria and their relatives, but other targets may also be considered. The project involves culturing different photosynthetic organisms under different physiological conditions, molecular cloning, protein purification and protein structure determination by single-particle cryoEM. You will have access to an in house 120kV Jeol1400 screening transmission electron microscopy (TEM), a Jeol3200 TEM, two Krios and an Arctica. A Leica cryoCLEM system is also available as well as several GPU workstations.

What You Will Do:

  • Maintain and grow different photosynthetic organisms.

  • Design and perform molecular biology, and protein purification experiments.

  • Perform protein reconstitution experiments and functional assays.

  • Operate and help maintain electron cryo-microscopes.

  • Process cryoEM data and generate atomic models.

  • Perform literature reviews and help prepare manuscripts and grant applications.

  • Prepare and present results to the lab and wider audiences via posters and oral presentations.

  • Participate in the training and supervision of less experienced lab members e.g. undergraduates/rotation students.

  • Maintain a tidy lab space and abide by EH&S requirements.

What Is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Protein Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Protein Structure Determination or a related field.

  • Experience in cyanobacteria growth.

  • Experience in molecular cloning, protein purification, and protein structure determination.

  • Experience in negative stain electron microscopy of isolated proteins.

  • Experience in structure determination by single-particle cryoEM.

  • Experience in protein reconstitution experiments.

  • Experience in protein function assays.

  • Experience in model building using programs such as Coot, Phenix, etc.

  • Experience with the UNIX command line.

  • Experience in directing the work of students/undergraduates.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience in presenting work to an international audience.

  • Good publication record.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Strong work ethics.

To be considered please provide the following materials in your application:

1) Curriculum Vitae or Resume

2) Cover letter
