Berkeley Lab’s Energy Geosciences Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to lead the development and application of novel diamond NV sensor methods for the study of aqueous chemical dynamics. Recent advances in 'quantum assisted sensing' have opened exciting new avenues for studying the chemistry of aqueous solutions in microscopic volumes and under conditions relevant to Earth and environmental systems. This research project is a collaboration between the Benjamin Gilbert (LBL Geoscience), Jeff Reimer and Alex Pines (UC-Berkeley College of Chemistry), Thomas Schenkel (LBL Physics) and Alex Weber-Bargioni (Molecular Foundry). The candidate will work on campus and at LBL locations.

What You Will Do:

  • Co-design, construct, align and demonstrate a new instrument for laser, microwave and radiowave-based spin-center relaxation measurements.

  • Design and fabricate microfluidics.

  • Perform fundamental experimental research on chemical dynamics and chemical kinetics problems relevant to terrestrial and subsurface geoscience systems.

  • Present research results through preparation of articles and manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.

What Is Required:

  • PhD in relevant physical sciences discipline.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, complete and publish scientific research projects.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills.

  • Prior experience in experimental quantum sensing.

  • Demonstrated technical competence with some of the relevant instrumentation and methods including: laser optics, ODMR, nuclear or electron magnetic relaxometry

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
