Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Engineering Division Division has an opening for a Prestaging Lead Engineer to join the team.

 

In this role, you will lead engineering teams (with possible line management) and will be responsible for the detailed planning and execution of complex scientific equipment projects. The Prestaging Lead Engineer is primarily responsible for the support of the technical, cost and scheduling activities in one area of the program. This position will provide technical expertise and oversight for large-scale procurements and work closely with outside vendors during fabrications of complex scientific equipment.

 

In this role, you will have to coordinate closely within a larger engineering team and project organization. This will require the ability to interface and work within a large diverse team and will require excellent technical communication skills. 

 

Work is intellectual, non-routine, and requires independent judgment and decision making with a wide range in scope. The successful candidate must be able to coordinate and lead a diverse workforce, interface with and oversee outside contractor work. This requires close interaction with internal and external manufacturers and the ability to build and maintain strategic business relationships while focusing on the macro perspective regarding technical needs and logistical details of projects.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Lead a small engineering and technician team to develop integrated engineering solutions that are optimized for performance, manufacturing, assembly and installation. 
  • Guide the fabrication and assembly of complex scientific experimental equipment for government-sponsored national research programs and facilities.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams to assemble, measure and align complex assemblies. Develop mechanical tools to address challenges related to assembly work with respect to positioning and alignment. 
  • Proactively address integration issues with other engineering teams and establish excellent communication channels between collaborating engineering teams.. 
  • Implement manufacturing and quality procedures including non-conformance and deviation reporting; oversee engineering change order process. Oversee manufacturing data and statistics to identify and eliminate non-conformances and fabrication issues.
  • May infrequently travel to vendors and trade shows, as appropriate.
  • Guide or support establishing performance criteria and specifications for manufacturing, assembly, and testing.
  • Develop project scope and estimate related logistics (time/cost estimates, assembly/installation timelines).
  • Analyze technical data, designs, preliminary specifications, manufacturing limitations, supplier facilities, and availability of parts and equipment.
  • Prepare technical or progress reports, prepare technical presentations,  and contribute to design reviews
  • Provide manufacturing oversight to technical staff assigned to engineering projects.
  • Analyze technical data, designs, preliminary specifications, manufacturing limitations, supplier facilities, and availability of parts and equipment, making manufacturing recommendations when necessary.
  • May work with engineers or scientists to define deliverables for technically complex or challenging procurements.

 

What is Required:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or similar technical degree plus at least 8-10 years of professional engineering experience or overall equivalent experience.
  • Well versed in CAD and other engineering tools. Experience reading, understanding, and interpreting assembly, detail, and weldment drawings.
  • Knowledge of the technical aspects and considerations of mechanical/manufacturing related items to determine appropriate procurements for various projects.
  • Ability to work in and collaborate with large scientific teams
  • Excellent and effective communication/interpersonal skills, meeting facilitation, organization and detail orientation with the ability to handle multiple competing priorities and projects
  • Proactive problem solver, willing to work closely with other engineering teams to solve roadblocks and able to approach assemblies on a system’s level.
  • Understanding of the project development process, associated terminology, and quality system requirements.
  • Technical knowledge of manufacturing and assembly practices and processes.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience in a R&D environment.
  • Systems engineering and QA engineering experience.
  • Experience with Project Life Cycle Management Systems.
  • Relevant experience in measurement and precision alignment processes.
  • Experience with assembly work for particle accelerator components (or similar work).
  • Experience with Creo parametric.
  • Experience with large assemblies.
  • Vacuum assembly experience

If hired at level 3:

The full salary range of this position is between $9,135 to $15,414 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $10,277 to $12,560 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

If hired at level 4:

The full salary range of this position is between $11,085 to $18,707 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $12,472 to $15,242 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. However the successful candidate is expected to be mostly on-site with an occasional possibility to telework. Consequently, the position will require working onsite 75% to 100% of the time. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
