Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will work on a multi-disciplinary team of biophysicists, biochemists, and materials scientists working to characterize protein aggregation using both standard bioanalytical methods and the relatively new method of X-ray footprinting. The research will be focused on characterizing oligomeric states of amyloid beta protein, especially as it relates to disease progression in Alzheimer’s Disease. The position will have the opportunity to learn X-ray structural biology methods, mass spectrometry, and microscopy methods at the Molecular Foundry and the Advanced Light Source at Berkeley Lab. The position will also work closely with collaborators at University of California at Santa Cruz, and will have the opportunity to spend time there to learn protein synthesis and cell toxicity assays.

What You Will Do:

  • Synthesize and purify various forms of amyloid beta proteins using standard methods
  • Prepare proteins for fluorescence microscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray irradiation experiments
  • Participate in collection, processing and analysis of X-ray data and microscopy images
  • Extend current mass spectrometry methods for detection of protein oxidation on specific residues due to X-ray exposure
  • Author peer-reviewed journal articles and contribute to research proposals

What is Required:

  • PhD degree in microbiology, biochemistry, bioengineering or related field.
  • Demonstrated research experience in molecular biology techniques, and familiarity with standard biological lab equipment.
  • Some experience with mass spectrometry.
  • Excellent organization skills and self-motivation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in X-ray structural biology methods.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at Berkeley Lab. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. Successful candidates for our faculty positions will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion.
  • Work will be primarily performed at :Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
