Berkeley Lab’s Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB) Division has an opening for a Research Technician.  Under general supervision, the Research Assistant will be supporting the Kerfeld Lab in the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology and Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Divisions at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The Kerfeld group studies protein structures and mechanisms of bacterial micro compartments and photo protection of photosynthetic organisms. The Research Assistant will be involved in cloning, expression, purification and characterization of proteins that form bacterial micro compartments or photoactive proteins that protect photosynthetic organisms from excess sunlight.


What You Will Do:

  • Performing research experiments as part of a team, recording and interpreting results with guidance from experienced researchers

  • Assisting in the ordering and receiving of consumables and equipment for the lab.

  • Supports the maintenance of databases for laboratory equipment, supplies, and expenses.

  • Reviews chemical inventory, hazardous waste storage and pickup through Environment, Health, and Safety.

  • Molecular cloning, expression, purification, crystallization and characterization of bacterial proteins.


What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred and up to a few years related experience.

  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office).

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Good teamwork skills.

  • Ability to assist in the preparation of presentations and protocols.

  • Experience in cloning, expression and purification of proteins in bacteria

  • Basic knowledge of genomics and bioinformatics

  • Ability to read and understand scientific literature

  • Ability to keep an ordered and complete record of research activities

  • Ability to summarize results weekly in lab meetings


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • B.S. in biology, biochemistry, or related field.

  • Experience working in a laboratory setting is preferred.

  • Experience with growing bacteria.

  • Knowledge of protein characterization methods like mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, protein crystallography, bioinformatics.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 1-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • There are multiple openings for this position.

  • Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements set rates.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
