Berkeley Lab’s Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology Division has an opening for a Plant Molecular Biology Research Assistant (RA). You will work in the Feedstocks Division of the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) under the direct supervision of Dr. Aymerick Eudes. This position will perform routine laboratory techniques by assisting in plant transformation, plant maintenance, and metabolite extraction. Plant samples will be analyzed through genotyping by PCR, measurements of growth, and by RT-PCR. The RA will also assist in day-to-day lab management supporting the Feedstocks Division.


What You Will Do:

  • Support experiments using standard techniques of molecular biology, including extraction and manipulation of DNA, gel electrophoresis, and PCR

  • Maintain well-documented laboratory notebook

  • Maintain plants including planting and harvesting seeds

  • Genotype mutant and transgenic plants

  • Perform biomass composition analyses (lignin measurements / saccharification assays)

Assist in day-to-day lab management such as ordering, inventory maintenance and waste management 


Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Perform minimal data analysis and preparation of draft figures/tables for publications as needed


What is Required: 

  • Experience with basic molecular biology and plant metabolite extraction techniques

  • Experience with plant biomass analyses (saccharification, lignin measurements)

  • Experience using equipment such as pH meters, autoclaves, balances, etc.

  • Attention to detail necessary for careful record keeping

  • Ability to follow well-defined protocols to produce consistent reproducible results

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communications skills

  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills

  • Interest in learning new procedures


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or similar field preferred, or equivalent work experience

  • Experience with plants, including transformation, growing on different media, and preparing samples from different tissues

  • Experience with plant metabolite extraction techniques

  • Experience handling bioenergy crops such as switchgrass or sorghum

  • This is a full-time career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be determined based on range by the collective bargaining agreement.
