Berkeley Lab’s Biological Systems & Engineering Division has an opening for a Research Associate. This Research Associate (RA) position will be part of the DIVA (Design, Implementation, Validation,  Automation) team, which provides DNA construction and sequence validation services to the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) and Agile BioFoundry (ABF) teams at the Emery Station East (ESE4) Facility. Under close supervision, the RA will be responsible for providing technical support for DNA sequencing and molecular cloning using high throughput automated methodologies. This includes the maintenance and operation of robotic instruments, record keeping for DNA construction and validation, and general lab duties such as inventory, ordering, and stocking supplies.   


What You Will Do:

  • Work under close supervision with other team members to meet project goals and deadlines

  • Perform next-generation DNA sequencing as part of an in-house sequencing service

  •  Perform routine molecular cloning and microbiology work such as plasmid minipreps, PCR, DNA gel extraction, DNA assembly, transformation, and colony screening

  •  Work with robotic automation equipment to perform DNA construction experiments, including Biomek, Echo 550, Nimbus SS, and QPix 460 instruments

  • Perform basic lab duties, including maintaining and purchasing consumables, and organizing personal lab bench space as well as common areas

  • Maintain lab notebook and instrumentation

  •  Follow EH&S guidelines to ensure safety in the lab and office spaces


Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Participate in lab organizational meetings, and provide periodic updates in lab group meetings

  • Prepare progress reports as needed


What is Required: 

  • B.S. or higher degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or related fields

  • 1-3 years experience in microbiology, molecular biology, or related lab

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team setting

  • Experience with next-generation DNA sequencing techniques

  • Experience with other molecular and microbiological techniques including genomic DNA and plasmid preparation, PCR, DNA gel electrophoresis, restriction digestion, ligation, transformation, colony picking and screening

  • Strong detail-oriented organizational skills

  • Good record keeping and troubleshooting skills

  • Excellent communication and writing skills

  • Proficiency with basic office software (Google docs, Excel, Powerpoint etc.)



Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with robotic instruments including Biomek, Echo, NIMBUS, and QPix

Notes: 

  • This is a full time, 3-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be determined based on range by the collective bargaining agreement.
