Berkeley Lab’s Biological Systems and Engineering Division has an opening for a Research Associate (RA) / Sr. Research Associate (Sr. RA). The successful candidate will work on the Design, Implementation, Validation, and Automation (DIVA) team, which provides DNA construction and sequence validation services to the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) and Agile BioFoundry (ABF) teams at the Emery Station East (ESE4) Facility. 


The position will be responsible for providing technical support for molecular cloning and DNA sequencing work using high throughput automated methodologies. This includes maintenance and operation of robotic instruments and equipment, record keeping for DNA construction and validation, and general lab duties such as inventory, ordering, and stocking supplies. 


This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.


What You Will Do:

  • Work closely with other team members to meet project goals and deadlines.

  • Perform semi-routine next-generation sequencing for in-house sequencing service with minimal analysis.

  • Perform molecular cloning and microbiology work such as miniprep plasmids, PCR, gel extraction, DNA assembly, transformation, colony screening etc.

  • Work with robotic automation equipment such as Biomek, Echo 550, Nimbus SS, Qpix 460 to perform DNA construction experiments.

  • Basic lab duties, including maintaining and purchasing consumables, personal lab bench and common area organization.

  • Maintain lab notebook and instrumentation.

  • Participate in group meetings and prepare reports as needed.

  • Follow EH&S guidelines to ensure safety in the lab and office spaces.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Under basic instruction, design and perform experiments, summarize results, and provide conclusions on R&D projects pertaining to next-generation sequencing and molecular cloning.

  • Under basic guidance, design and perform method development experiments to further optimize protocols for in-house sequencing and cloning services.

  • Maintain electronic records of experimental designs and results/data. Archive strains.

  • Present results in technical meetings.

  • Follow EH&S guidelines to ensure safety at the lab and office spaces.

  • Troubleshoot and identify technical problems in next-generation sequencing and molecular cloning when a situation arises

  • Prepare media, buffers, and stock solutions.

  • Contribute to data and text in publications and patents.


What is Required: 

  • 1-3 years of experience in microbiology, molecular biology or related lab with demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team.

  • Experience with Next-generation sequencing techniques.

  • Experience with molecular biology techniques including genomic DNA and plasmid preparation, PCR, DNA gel electrophoresis, restriction digestion, ligation, transformation, colony picking and screening.

  • Strong organization skills and detail-oriented.

  • Good record keeping and troubleshooting skills.

  • Excellent communication and writing skills.

  • Proficiency with basic office software (Google Docs, Excel, PowerPoint etc.).

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree or higher in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related areas; or equivalent experience.

  • Experience working with robotic instruments such as biomek, Echo,Tecan, etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team setting.

  • Good understanding of how scientific principles apply to problem being studied, ability to draw conclusions from data and to provide solutions.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of experimental design, experience troubleshooting problems, conducting analysis of data and recording experimental data.

  • Must demonstrate efficient time management skills and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously as well as part of a diverse team environment.

  • Excellent communication and writing skills.

  • Proficiency with basic office software (Google Docs, Excel, PowerPoint etc.)

  • Experience in various software, analytical, and statistical tools.

  • Experience in programming language e.g. Python etc.

  • This is a full time career appointment.

  • Classification will depend upon the applicant's level of skills, knowledge, and abilities.

  • Exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
