Berkeley Lab’s Computational Chemistry, Materials and Climate (CCMC) Group is hiring for a Research Scientist in Quantum Systems. As a Research Scientist, you will be responsible for developing research opportunities and performing research in quantum computing and computational atomic, molecular and materials physics. You will focus on the development of new and novel methodologies, algorithms and software to scale open quantum system simulations, including simulations on quantum computers, and fundamental computational physics problems in quantum networking physical and control layers.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Contribute to and provide intellectual leadership to the development of new and novel algorithms solving open quantum systems on quantum computers.
  • Contribute to and provide intellectual leadership to the development of novel approaches to solve fundamental physics problems in quantum networking.
  • Contribute to or provide task level leadership to research applying physics and quantum chemistry methodologies on quantum computers.
  • Develop new funding opportunities relevant to laboratory research efforts in quantum computing, computational atomic, molecular and materials physics.
  • Document work and results in the form of journal papers and conference proceedings. Present work and results at scientific meetings.

 

What is Required:

  • PhD degree or equivalent experience in AMO or related physics fields.
  • Experience in developing quantum algorithms for open quantum systems.
  • Experience in tackling fundamental physics problems in quantum networking.
  • Demonstrated experience in applying physics and quantum chemistry methodologies on quantum computers.
  • Experience leading proposal writing and small projects.
  • Previous experience providing leadership and mentorship to students.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with programming languages other than Python

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 5 year, career-track term appointment that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
