Berkeley Lab’s Facilities Division is offering an exciting opportunity to work with world leaders in science and be a part of a team that will advance science and influence the world. The Rigger will assemble rigging to lift and move research or construction equipment/machinery. You may load, unload and assist in the relocation of equipment/machinery via operation of a 15-ton forklift or smaller.

 

Berkeley Lab is located above UC Berkeley, on 202 acres that house over two million square feet of state-of-the-art scientific centers and support facilities. The Lab’s mission encompasses many scientific fields, and its buildings include supercomputing facilities, genetic sequencing labs, laser labs, microscope facilities, and office complexes. Thirteen Nobel Prizes have been associated with Berkeley Lab.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a wide range of crane and rigging support services lab-wide including off-site facilities, as requested.

  • Perform work, using the pendant, radio, and cab operated bridge crane controls of 30-ton capacity or smaller.

  • Perform work, using forklifts of 15-ton or smaller. 

  • Through periodic training, maintain forklift and crane certifications, per OSHA Regulations and LBNL Standards.

  • Provide general rigging support including, but not limited to, concrete blocks, magnets, high value and delicate research equipment, temporary buildings, containers, computer, and building equipment.

  • Assist in the assembly and disassembly of accelerators and associated equipment, experimental equipment, experimental set-up, radiation shielding, and personnel enclosure.

  • Assist in fabrication and testing of equipment including, but not limited to, experimental and research apparatus, new rigging equipment, lifting fixtures, and building equipment.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of an apprenticeship or comparable industrial or military training; demonstrates journey-level rigging knowledge, skills, and abilities in industrial and commercial construction.

  • Experience independently inspecting worksite conditions, discussing/analyzing needs with clients, defining the best approach to actual requirements.

  • Experience using the pendant, radio, and cab operated bridge crane controls of 30-ton capacity or smaller.

  • Experienced forklift operator, up to 15-ton capacity.

  • Experience in the appropriate job site organization.

  • Familiar with the operation and maintenance of complex tools and machines.

  • Broad basic knowledge of rigging and equipment installation acquired through training, experience, and certification.

  • Experience independently inspecting worksite conditions, discussing/analyzing needs with clients, defining the best approach to actual requirements.

  • Experience in the appropriate job site organization.

  • Able to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds, work at heights; work in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, under florescent lights; able to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, has manual dexterity in both hands; must use protective clothing, safety equipment, lift 60 lb. to chest height.  Able to communicate clearly over telephone and two-way radio. 

  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License.

  • Ability to obtain DMV Class B License with the following endorsements, Tanker and Hazardous Material, within the first 12 months of employment. 

 

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of LBL facilities layout, key personnel, procedures governing store issues, safety program, and facilities design requirements.  All will be required after employment.

  • Millwright’s experience is desirable.

  • Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements set rates.
