Berkeley Lab’s Facilities Division has an opening for a Rigger-Crane Operator to join their Site Utilities & Maintenance Team!

 

In this role, you will assemble rigging to lift and move research or construction equipment/machinery.  This position may require you to load, transport, unload and assist in the relocation of equipment/machinery via operation of mobile cranes with capacities up to 50 tons and bridge cranes with capacities up to 30 tons.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Provide a wide range of crane and rigging support service lab-wide including off-site facilities, as requested.
  • Perform work, using pendant, and wireless operated bridge cranes to 30-ton capacity.
  • May operate fixed and swing cab mobile cranes up to 50-ton capacity, and forklifts up to 15 ton. 
  • Through periodic training, maintain forklift and crane certifications, per OSHA Regulations and Standards.
  • Provide general rigging support including, but not limited to, concrete blocks, magnets, high value and delicate research equipment, temporary buildings, containers, computer and building equipment.
  • Assist in the assembly and disassembly of accelerators and associated equipment, experimental equipment, experimental set-up, radiation shielding and personnel enclosure.
  • Assist in fabrication and testing of equipment including, but not limited to, experimental and research apparatus, new rigging equipment, lifting fixtures, and building equipment.

 

What is Required:

  • Completion of apprenticeship or comparable industrial training, including a demonstrated journey level knowledge of crane, and rigging skills, as well as the ability to implement skills in an  industrial and/or commercial construction environment.
  • Broad knowledge of rigging and equipment installation acquired through training, experience and/or certifications.
  • Experience in reading and understanding load charts, lift plans, and the ability to set up and operate mobile cranes on various terrains.
  • Experience operating a forklift, up to 15-ton capacity, in confined areas, and uneven terrain. 
  • NCCCO TSS TLL crane certifications.
  • Effective interpersonal skills including experience inspecting work site conditions, discussing/analyzing needs with clients, and defining the best approach to fulfill requirements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate and understand signals and other verbal commands over telephone and/or two-way radio.
  • Must have a valid Class A California Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a Hazmat and Tanker endorsement.
  • Must have the ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds, work at heights, in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, under florescent lights, use manual dexterity in both hands, wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), use safety equipment such as SCA type respirators, and lift 50 lbs. to chest height.

 

What We Prefer:

  • Millwright experience.
  • Experience moving heavy machinery moving.
  • Ability to read schematics.  

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay. 
  • The salary for this position is $43.19 hourly.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes with predetermined salary rates.
