Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Materials Sciences Division has an opening for a Robot-Assisted Inorganic Thin Film Synthesis Postdoc to join the team.

The Materials Sciences Division (MSD) invites applicants for a postdoctoral position to pursue robot-assisted chemical solution synthesis and characterization of complex materials. The scope of the postdoc will be the development of synthesis mechanisms where synthesis of crystalline compounds should be thought of as a complex reaction path rather than direct formation of the target phase.

This research is part of a team science program - D2S2 Data-driven Synthesis Science - and combines robotic synthesis, text-mining, high-throughput ab initio computation of thermochemical reaction energetics, and in situ (synchrotron) observation of reaction pathways. Experimental work in the lab as well as at the synchrotron includes chemical solution synthesis of thin films involving an automated robotic platform, batch characterization starting from the early nucleation stages to final films, tool development, and analysis of large data sets. Materials of interest include but not limited to chemical solution processed multinary oxides and chalcogenides. The work will be performed in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary, and collaborative environment; the ability to work both independently and as part of a team is essential.

What You Will Do:

  1. Thin film fabrication via chemical solution synthesis involving a liquid handling robotic platform.
  2. Optical and structural batch characterization of thin films.
  3. Analysis of large data sets, development of automated data analysis pipelines.
  4. Use and contribute to the development of work flows to enable closed-loop experimentation
  5. In situ characterization during synthesis.
  6. Development of in situ characterization capabilities.
  7. Close interaction with LBNL researchers to use established high throughput synthesis and characterization platforms for materials discovery.
  8. Analyze data, compose manuscripts for submission to peer reviewed journals, and give presentations of scientific findings at conferences.
  9. Work innovative in a multidisciplinary team.

What is Required:

  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or related field.
  • Strong background in thin film material synthesis via chemical solution processing.
  • Material characterization and analysis including diffraction, spectroscopic, and optoelectronic properties.
  • Experience handling and analyzing large data sets.
  • Creativity in applying concepts to different research problems.
  • Self-motivated individual that is able to work independently, yet also willing to contribute as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, work with students from different levels and backgrounds
  • Strong publication record.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Commitment to working safely at all times, including radiation and laser hazards.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with synthesis automation.
  • Experience with batch processing, automated data analysis, and coding.
  • Experience with in situ experimentation.
  • Previous experience performing measurements at synchrotrons.

For full consideration, please apply by January 15, 2023.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
