Berkeley Lab’s Information Technology Division has an opening for a Science IT Consultant. In this role, you will provide IT capabilities and consulting support to science and technical programs. This position will work closely with many different science teams simultaneously as an IT-expert across all phases of the scientific lifecycle, supporting the efficiency and effectiveness of capabilities for data analysis, data management, data storage, computation, identity management, and many other IT needs expressed by scientific projects.

 

This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.


What You Will Do:

  • Serve as the first point of contact for researchers to ensure IT infrastructure match scientific needs.

  • Work with a wide community of scientific disciplinary experts to identify emerging and essential information technology needs and translate those needs into information technology requirements.

  • Support the efficiency and effectiveness of capabilities for data analysis, data management, data storage, computation, identity management, and many other IT needs expressed by scientific projects.

  • Research, find, and evaluate new technologies and provide implementation support and advice on a wide range of compute, storage, networking, and data analytics capabilities.

  • Promote and assist researchers with the use of Cloud Compute Services (AWS, GCP primarily) containerization tools, etc. to scientific clients and research groups.

  • Oversee and work as part of collaborations with ESNET, NERSC, UC Berkeley, UC Merced and other Research IT programs and resources (Software Carpentry, D-Lab, CITRIS, etc).

  • Serve as a resource on Research-IT topics and teach courses to Laboratory Science Staff, Post-docs and others on specific topics of expertise.

  • Support Machine Learning capability growth at LBL.


What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Systems Engineering or a related field or equivalent training/experience.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience designing and building working web-based working projects using modern languages, tools, and frameworks.

  • Experience supporting scientific facilities, and prior knowledge of Science user needs, program management, grant application processes, data management planning or lab-bench IT needs.

  • Experience with HPC or cloud computing environments.

  • Experience with marketing, customer acquisition or fulfillment, or related customer outreach and retention capabilities.

  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with, and developing requirements from a diverse multidisciplinary team environment and excellent interpersonal skills. 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to present and disseminate scientific software developments at group meetings and conferences.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly and efficiently create working proof-of-concept implementations to test out ideas.


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced graduate degree in Physics, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field or equivalent combination of skills, training, and experience.

  • Significant experience designing and building working web-based working projects using modern languages, tools, and frameworks.

  • Experience and expertise working on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.

  • Familiarity with software version control systems (git, github, bitbucket) and program management methods.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
