Berkeley Lab’s Information Technology (IT) Division has an opening for a Science IT Storage Engineer in their Science Support Group!

 

In this role, you will play a pivotal role in the creation of a portfolio of data management services aimed at supporting Lab scientists. You will be responsible for developing the standards and tools used to deploy and manage centralized services that will serve a wide range of scientific applications.

 

The Science Support Group is part of the IT Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. This group provides technical support and training services through a collaborative, team-based approach. In addition to providing computing through VM hosting services, and through integration with the Lawrencium HPC cluster, this group also supports storage and data management needs for our science customers.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Design, develop and maintain systems and infrastructure to support centralized data management Science IT services, such as scientific data landing, storage, tagging, query and management.

  • Work directly with scientific research groups to migrate existing services into centralized infrastructure.

  • Develop infrastructure for monitoring and reporting on status of all storage infrastructure and systems

  • Develop and support orchestration tools for Science IT, using AWS and GCP services

  • Deploy and maintain converged, scalable, and reliable storage infrastructure.

  • Work with scientists to define existing workflows and needs, and develop recommended architecture to implement using centralized storage services.

  • Coordinate activities of a small team of engineers on small projects

  • Maintain current activity status in project and ticket management systems


What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent training/experience and a minimum of 3 years of mid- to large- scale NAS, block array management, Lustre, and/or object storage experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in Linux Administration in a production setting.

  • Administrative experience in a Kerberos/LDAP or Active Directory IdM environment.

  • Experience managing virtualization services, including VMware, Xen or ProxMox.

  • A strong desire to experiment with, and testbed, new technologies.

  • A strong foundation in network knowledge and data management security practices.

  • Exceptional troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.

  • Knowledge of cyber security concepts, include threat mitigation, encryption, and firewalls.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Knowledge of networking concepts, including architecture, diagnostics, security, and protocols.

  • Experience providing technical support for scientific users.

  • Ability to sort through complex issues and conduct comparative analysis of multiple solutions.       

  • Ability to balance a complex workload, and to prioritize a mix of short-term and long-term objectives.

  • Ability to work independently in well with a broad range of stakeholders, both technical and non-technical.

 

What We Desire:

  • Experience administering systems in a customer-facing role.

  • Extensive experience supporting customers in an academic or research environment.

  • Experience with monitoring tools such as Nagios or Bosun.

  • Experience implementing data backup strategies, including replication, off-site duplication, full and incremental backups, and VMWare-integrated backup solutions.

  • Experience deploying and configuring storage solutions, including NetApp, Hitachi, Dell/ESM, and others.

  • Experience deploying containerized software, and migrating existing applications to containers, such as Docker.

  • Experience with devops tools and methodologies, including configuration management, distributed source control, and tools such as Puppet, Ansible or Salt.

  • Experience supporting Windows and MacOS storage clients via Active Directory.

  • Experience with public and private cloud offerings, including AWS, GCP, OpenStack and others.

  • Familiarity with orchestrations concepts and tools, including Kubernetes, vRealize, ServiceNow, and OpenStack Heat.

  • Experience managing database servers, including resource tuning, backups, load-balancing, and access control.

  • Knowledge of database systems, including schema design, SQL scripting, and data abstraction.

  • Experience managing projects, including resource management, task scheduling, and reporting.

  • Experience working in an IT Service Management environment (e.g. Service Now).

  • This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), Career appointment.
