Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology & Urban Systems Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate. The successful candidate will work with scientific staff to provide technical support to the research team in energy performance of windows, specifically with a focus on thermal measurements of windows, window systems, window shading and more generally, building facades. In addition to measurements, the prospective person will be expected to contribute to the development of mathematical models and algorithms applicable to windows building facades. Also, the prospective employee will be expected to contribute to the development of innovative technology solutions for windows and building facades.


What You Will Do:

  • Develop mathematical and computer models for energy performance of windows

  • Develop innovative technology solutions for windows and window shading

  • Develop and maintain data acquisition software in support of measurement activities

  • Measure thermal and solar-optical properties of glazing, windows components, and window systems

  • Calibrate and maintain measurement sensors and equipment


Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • General programming

  • Setting up experimental facility


What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field (e.g., civil, architectural engineering, etc.) or equivalent experience.

  • Advanced heat transfer knowledge

  • Experience in measuring heat transfer and energy performance in windows

  • Experience in building measurement facilities for heat transfer of building envelope components

  • Experience in experimental setup and data processing

  • LabView knowledge


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Python programming knowledge

  • Numerical modeling experience

  • This is a full time career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
