Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Foundry Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate.

The Nanofabrication facility at The Molecular Foundry houses around 5000 sqft cleanroom research laboratory. We are looking for an exceptional Scientific Engineering Associate to maintain cleanroom instrumentation, supervise day-to-day lab operations, manage lab space and inventory, and enforce safety standards.

 What You Will Do:

  • In cooperation with other Foundry scientific and technical staff members, with limited guidance, maintain service facilities for micro- and nanolithography, thin-film deposition, nanoimprinting lithography, wet-chemical processing, focused ion beam, plasma etching, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy.
  • Contribute to hands-on troubleshooting, repair, modification, design, and installation of new equipment and processes to meet the needs of a diverse set of projects in an interdisciplinary nanofabrication setting
  • Manage and enforce laboratory safety and help maintain a safe working environment
  • Train, assist and supervise users, students, and scientists to operate equipment within the Facility and provide timely technical support.
  • Facilitate the use of techniques and processes such as photo- and electron beam-lithography, imprinting lithography, thin-film material deposition, wet and dry etching, as well as other common nanofabrication techniques and processes.
  • Under supervisor’s direction, design and prepare nanostructures for collaborative projects using standard and novel processes employing state-of-the-art nanofabrication tools
  • Develop new and innovative processes for nanofabrication using the available equipment to achieve reproducible, high-resolution control and precision of nanofabricated structures and devices

What is Required:

  • BS in relevant scientific or engineering discipline, or equivalent work experience
  • Two years coordinating safety in a laboratory setting and developing safe protocols for instrument use
  • Experience preparing and handling regulated hazardous waste and/or operating liquid waste treatment units
  • Two years of cleanroom management and/or extensive work
  • Maintenance and operation of micro and/or nanofabrication equipment, e.g. thin-film deposition, wet chemical and plasma etching, scanning electron microscopy, nanoimprinting, and focused ion beam
  • Troubleshooting and conducting repair and maintenance of scientific instruments and fabrication-specific tools
  • Excellent record keeping and tool logging management
  • Hands-on installation and modification of scientific equipment
  • Cleanroom infrastructure management and maintenance such as air flow, particle filtration, and exhaust
  • Procurement and installation of complex or large scientific instrumentation.
  • Experience managing vendors and service contracts
  • Interfacing with facilities contractors and managing their work
  • Assisting laboratory users and/or scientists on complex projects and multi-step fabrication processes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team environment and to interact effectively with colleagues

Desired Qualifications:

  • Completion of 24-hour HAZWOPER training certification
  • Training laboratory users and scientists in fabrication techniques and processes in a multicultural environment
  • Managing new user onboarding
  • Coordinating and supervising the work of other employees and/or external users
  • Maintenance of toxic gas systems, including gas cabinets, manifolds, sensors, alarm systems, and plumbing
  • Knowledge of EH&S safety protocols and requirements in multi-user laboratory settings
  • Oversight of chemical inventories and stocking of a cleanroom
  • Rapid prototyping using 3D printing and machining tools (e.g. lathe, mill, CNC, etc…)
  • CAD software for generating engineering drawings for parts fabrication
  • Coordinating large-scale equipment installation projects in a big laboratory setting

For full consideration, please apply by August 5, 2021.
