Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Nuclear Science Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate to join the team.

Under the direction of the principal investigator in the Applied Nuclear Physics Program (ANP), you will engage in development, implementation, and analysis as part of a team of physicists and engineers working on the development of multi-sensor systems that apply computer vision concepts to overcome nuclear nonproliferation and safeguards challenges.  You will contribute to the development of image analyses to identify, localize, and track objects and collaborate to build mapping capabilities for static objects. You will use Cloud based services (e.g. AWS) to perform some of these tasks at scale.

What You Will Do:

  • Perform scientific data analysis using the scientific python stack.
  • Provide technical support for investigation and development of image analysis for object detection and tracking.
  • Participate in the software development and integration of multi-sensor systems. This will include managing software installation and dependencies, experimental testing and evaluation, and system design and refinement.
  • Develop, implement, and optimize advanced data analyses. This will include multi-sensor data fusion, implementation and optimization of computer vision tools for novel applications, and optimization for either real-time or large-scale offline processing.
  • Perform research and development following best practices, ensuring reproducible and well documented results.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Contribute to papers, reports, and proposals and make oral presentations of original work.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, data science, physics, applied physics, or nuclear engineering.
  • Experience with python and/or C++ for scientific data analysis.
  • Experience with collaborative software development with git.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff at all levels with the Nuclear Science Division.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills to interact with scientific investigators, administrators, management and technical staff.
  • Demonstrated data analysis skills and proficiency in C/C++ or Python.
  • Curiosity and interest in computer vision and cloud computing.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform research individually and as part of a group.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills to contribute to ANP goals and objectives.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with cloud based computing services like AWS and Google Cloud.
  • Experience with machine learning libraries in python.
  • Experience with computer vision techniques and image processing.
  • Experience performing algorithm development, signal processing, or statistical analysis.
  • Familiarity with ROS, C++, Docker/Kubernetes, and Linux.
  • Interest and experience in applied computer vision.

Notes:

  • This is a full time 1 year career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on-site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
