Berkeley Lab’s Joint Genome Institute (JGI) is looking for a talented Scientific Engineering Associate to join their DNA Synthesis Platform Group!

 

In this exciting role, you will serve as the primary point of contact responsible for coordinating, managing workflows, and processing user-science projects.  This position will be responsible for performing laboratory activities by applying molecular biology and laboratory automation knowledge and skill sets to the processing of user-science projects. 

 

You will have the opportunity to interact with collaborators, vendors, and other experts to identify and generate solutions. Reporting to the DNA Synthesis Platform Lead, you will provide critical input on new protocols/methods to identify molecular and bioinformatic workflow efficiency improvements.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Perform the necessary laboratory activities including molecular biology, operation of laboratory automation, project tracking in LIMS, and sequencing QC of DNA constructs/libraries as required for the successful and timely completion of user projects.
  • Provide critical input/feedback for future LIMS requirements and possible new LIMS platforms.
  • Provide project/laboratory management support to the DNA synthesis platform by cataloging and documenting all incoming reagents, vectors, resources etc. towards organization and streamlining of user-science projects for the group.
  • Provide input and training with onboarding new group members.
  • Catalog all completed projects and DNA constructs in appropriate databases towards future dissemination as required.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for interactions between the DNA Synthesis Group and the Project Management Office (PMO).
  • Interact with JGI users in conference calls and contribute to the design of user projects.
  • Provide critical feedback on molecular workflows and new technologies including the integrated robotic platform for high throughput DNA synthesis as well as bioinformatic solutions by interacting with staff both within the group and other JGI groups.
  • Participate in cross-team and cross-group collaborative projects within the JGI.
  • Produce documentation and standard operating procedures for all technology and optimization projects.
  • Present project updates in group meetings and provide regular updates on process optimization and development efforts.

 

What is Required:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Biology, Molecular Biology, Synthetic Biology, or a related discipline and demonstrated experience in methods of DNA assembly and management of projects or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in DNA assembly methods, troubleshooting, and DNA sequencing methods.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management.
  • Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and maintain automated lab instrumentation.
  • Strong analytical skills including problem solving by evaluating data and making recommendations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to organize, maintain, and present data.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work in a research team environment with a diverse group of scientific and technical staff.
