Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology and Urban Systems (BTUS) Division is looking for a Scientific Engineering Associate to join their FLEXLAB!

 

In this role, you will use technical scientific/engineering concepts to plan, design, and implement control systems, data acquisition, and other experimental setups for FLEXLAB’s evolving projects.

 

FLEXLAB offers a dynamic environment with a dedicated team and an opportunity to participate and support energy efficiency projects that can make an impact.  FLEXLAB has conducted over $65M in research projects since launch, for a wide variety of sponsors including the U.S. Department of Energy, the California Energy Commission, utilities, building owners, and manufacturers.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Will acquire an understanding of and document the functional requirements of FLEXLAB research experimental setup, focusing on HVAC controls and any new experimental apparatus to be built, with direct input from the project PI.
  • Assist with design and development test setup for experimental apparatus and controls to meet the research projects’ functional requirements.
  • Develop HVAC control sequences to meet specific research project requirements.
  • Tune controls as needed to meet performance requirements prior to test commencement.
  • Provide technical knowledge to specify and implement the project hardware (sensors, DAQ systems, custom hardware).
  • Collaborate with the project team on the hardware and make necessary calibrations.
  • Contribute to the plan and design of control systems and data acquisition for FLEXLAB’s evolving projects and infrastructure upgrades.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge) in Engineering, Physics, or a related field and a minimum of 2 years of related professional technical experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of programming of commercial and residential HVAC systems and controls hands-on technical experience.
  • Knowledge of HVAC controls systems.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use data acquisition and field measurement systems including both hardware and software.
  • Strong understanding of physics and electronics associated with HVAC systems and sensors
  • Ability to gauge project scope, timeline, work with minimal guidance, meet project deliverables and deadlines, and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Strong experience with data analysis in spreadsheet environments such as Excel.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

 

What We Prefer:

  • Master’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge) in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Ability to supervise and train early-career staff.
  • Ability to provide leadership and coordination of research staff for laboratory experiments.
  • Knowledge of typical HVAC sequences of operations.
  • Instrumentation calibration experience using water bath and NIST traceable standards as relates to building science.
  • Understanding of tracer gas analysis instrumentation and procedures.
  • Experience with Python programming and R data analysis programming environment.
  • National Instruments LabView and TestStand programming environment.
  • Experience with commercial electrical wiring.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to lift at least 20lbs, climb ladders, and stand for several hours as needed.  
  • Must be able to work on the interior and exterior of FLEXLAB including working inside buildings, as well as on roofs and exterior areas (e.g. central plant).   
  • FLEXLAB does have one confined space under the rotating testbed which has a safety procedure in place for access.  Access to this location occurs roughly on an annual basis, or as needed.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year, Term appointment with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 5 years total or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
