Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Engineering Division has an immediate opening for a Semiconductor Device Engineering Associate to join the team.


You will work closely with some of the world’s finest interdisciplinary scientists and engineers and apply your engineering skills at Berkeley Lab to help bring science solutions to the world.


At Berkeley Lab, you’ll make an impact on some of the world’s most exciting scientific experiments and instruments. The custom integrated electronics we develop at Berkeley Lab enable new and novel advances in scientific exploration with key contributions to large-scale international science experiments across all scales of inquiry from the smallest subatomic particles such as the Higgs Boson at the Large Hadron Collider to the study of the Cosmic Microwave Background, the echo of the Big Bang, to unlocking the mysteries of the human brain.


The programs that you will support are high-visibility projects in the photon science and electron microscopy communities. You assist the lead scientist in silicon processing, lab support functions and maintenance of processing equipment.  The processing effort is directed towards creating and implementing novel methods of fabricating and post-processing charge coupled devices (CCDs), CMOS pixel sensors and low noise silicon diode detectors.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • Under consultation provide multifunctional technical support, applying engineering or scientific concepts and practices in a scientific/engineering field in design of experimental apparatuses, scientific/ engineering support, and coordination.

  • Investigate, create and develop new methods and techniques for project advancement.

  • Uses professional concepts in accordance with Lab objectives to solve complex problems in creative and effective ways.

  • Act as a liaison between scientists and scientific, technical, and administrative support within the Lab.

  • Fabricate silicon devices using an array of processing techniques.

  • Perform routine equipment maintenance.

  • Perform troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.

  • Work in a cleanroom environment.


Additional Desired Responsibilities:

  • Design photomasks for detector fabrication.

  • Design application specific mechanical parts and work with machinists to have these parts fabricated.

  • Provide laboratory support by managing chemical inventory and waste disposal.

  • Repair or assist in repair of process equipment.

  • Work with building maintenance personnel to coordinate maintenance of laboratory infrastructure.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, or a related field with preferably two to five years of experience.

  • Experience handling wet process chemicals typically used in silicon device processing.

  • Experience with physical vapor deposition systems, e.g. evaporation and sputtering.

  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing laboratory equipment.

  • Experience with silicon device fabrication and testing.

  • Basic knowledge of lithography, semiconductor fabrication, and vacuum system operation.

  • Ability to use complex processing equipment and handle hazardous materials safely.

  • Knowledge of basic electronics.

  • Knowledge of basic semiconductor physics and processing chemistry.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • Ability to work closely with other team members.

  • Demonstrated documentation skills.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Portions of this work will be conducted in Class 100 and Class 10 clean rooms.

Notes:

  • This is a 2-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.
