Berkeley Lab’s Energy Analysis & Environmental Impacts Division has an opening for a Senior Research Associate. The Senior Research Associate will examine energy use and environmental conditions data from various sources, with emphasis on residential appliances and air conditioning and heating products for commercial application. The successful candidate should have a technical background in the field of engineering and have the abilities and skills to process and mine large data sets.     


What You Will Do:

  • Gather and process data from multiple sources, such as field studies, surveys, and publicly available information.

  • Use and adapt standardized analysis methods and strategies to review, process, and clean data.

  • Upload and manage data files in databases.

  • Write progress reports on data processing and quality control using summary charts and tables.

  • Perform review of instrumentation setup for data collection and transmission purposes and conduct regular audits in the field.  

  • Provide support in the form of scientific literature review, presentation development, and technical reports publications.

  • Adhere to Lab and ETA safety requirements and complete all required trainings on time.


Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Assist by providing inputs and programming support to the complex data analysis approach.

  • Keep and maintain detailed records of all research activities and data collection efforts.

  • Participate in meetings and on-site activities.

  • Assist in preparing materials to update funders.

  • Support database applications, as needed.


What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering and two to five years of years of experience or M.S. degree and/or equivalent experience.

  • Experience handling large datasets and ensuring data quality.

  • Proficiency with MS Office applications and one programming language (R/Phyton/Java)

  • Ability to work independently and interact effectively with colleagues in a dynamic work environment.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with and enthusiasm for engineering systems such as air conditioning and refrigeration products

  • Previous research experience

Notes:

  • This is a full time 2 year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
