Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Energy Analysis & Environmental Impacts Division has an opening for a Senior Research Associate to join the team.

 

The Energy Efficiency Standards Department identifies the feasibility and cost of increased energy efficiency requirements for different appliances. EES conducts specific market, technical, and economic analyses for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Appliance Standards Program such as life-cycle cost analyses, national impact assessments, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory impact analysis to support standards rulemaking. 

 

In this exciting role, you will participate in ongoing rulemaking projects related to one or more of the following equipment and appliances: home appliances, space conditioning, commercial and industrial pumps and fans, space and water heating, or other products. Tasks include:

 

  • Write and assemble energy efficiency standards documentation. 
  • Perform comprehensive market research and technology assessments of appliances. 
  • Develop quantitative analyses and undertake support tasks as required.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Development of environmental and utility impact assessment documentation for multiple rulemaking projects. 
  • Collaborate with multiple rulemaking teams to provide comprehensive research in support of the regulatory impact analysis and develop the related documentation. 
  • Provide word and PDF documentation formatting support for multiple rulemaking projects.
  • Assist in research and compile technical, market, and energy use data and using those data conduct routine energy and economic analyses of residential and commercial appliances for efficiency standards appliance projects. Perform semi-autonomous preliminary analyses using standard statistical methods.
  • Contribute to the development of quantitative and analytical tools, including complex spreadsheets for energy and economic analysis.
  • Contribute to writing literature reviews, energy efficiency standards and test procedure documentation including Federal Register documents and technical support documents.
  • Provide additional support in the form of preparing presentation materials and LBNL reports, including development of tables and graphs.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in environmental science, engineering, physics or related field and two to five years of experience with increasing responsibility or an M.S. degree in environmental science, engineering, physics or related field.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience conducting literature reviews, data collection and analysis, and synthetizing results.
  • Experience using Excel for data management, quantitative analysis and graphing. Experience with advanced spreadsheet programming.
  • Proven technical writing and excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Track record of taking initiative, as well as collaboration and organizational skills.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Interest in energy and environmental issues.
  • Familiarity with energy efficient appliance and equipment technologies.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, VBA, or a similar programming language.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • The full salary range for this position is $62,316.00 - $96,432.00. The budgeted salary range that the Lab reasonably expects to pay for this position is $75,411.00 - $83,349.00. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, and also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
