Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology and Urban Systems (BTUS) Division has an opening for Senior Scientific Engineering Associate to join their Building and Industrial Applications (BIA) Department!


In this role, you provide multifunctional technical support, investigate and establish programs and practices to improve energy efficiency and sustainability primarily within the manufacturing sector.  You will focus on areas that may include understanding markets and target audience motivations to accelerate the adoption of ISO 50001 based energy management systems and water use and treatment practices. Please note, this position will report to one or more principal investigators to support multiple areas of research.


The BIA Department engages in research spanning the application and study of a range of technologies, policies, and business practices including those for data centers, laboratories, federal installations, manufacturing facilities, and others.


What You Will Do:

  • Provide technical support as a member of a team on energy management systems, demand management, and water efficiency topics. 

  • Conduct literature and field-based research to understand markets, target audience motivations, and advance other current research activities related to manufacturing sector areas of interest potentially including ISO 50001 based energy management systems and manufacturing water use and treatment.

  • Identify data gaps and develop data collection strategies.

  • Work collaboratively with team members to conduct research.

  • Work with team members and external stakeholders to use research findings to develop programs, resources, and other materials to advance DOE and LBNL positions related to research topics.

  • Contribute to written reports, papers, and presentations on findings, including graphical representations.

  • Conceptualize and develop innovative communication methods including websites and accessible databases to communicate research findings to lay and expert audiences.

  • Communicate with outside contractors, sponsors, and other stakeholders.


What is Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Social Science, Business, Program Management, Public /  Political / Environmental Policy or a related discipline and extensive professional technical experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Evidence of technical competence, working knowledge and innovative thinking as it relates to energy management systems.

  • Basic knowledge of the manufacturing sector.

  • Ability to collaboratively conceptualize and actuate research to produce quantifiable results pertaining to qualitative data sets.

  • Ability to prepare reports and papers.

  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and deliver output on time with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to present research findings to internal and external audiences.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a diverse interdisciplinary team, and contribute to an active intellectual environment.


What We Desire:

  • Masters Degree in Engineering, Social Science, Business, Program Management, Public /  Political / Environmental Policy or a related discipline or equivalent training and experience in a related field.

  • Experience working under limited supervision to conduct research and apply findings to the development of national programs.

  • Experience leading high level communications with external stakeholders to gain information and inform.

  • Ability to conceptualize research plans with senior staff.

  • Evidence of engagement developing funding.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.

  • This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), Career appointment.
