Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Facilities Division has an opening for a Shipping Receiving and Transportation Supervisor to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will be reporting to the Department Head of the Business Center, this supervisory position is responsible for the day-to-day operation of Shipping Receiving and Transportation (SRT) within the Facilities Division. Under minimal direction, you will provide first-line supervision to truck drivers, material handlers, shipper and mail room personnel.  Plans, schedules, coordinates, and directs all driver, material handler and administrative support requirements for SRT. Responsible for the hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplining of all SRT personnel. 

You will provide oversight to the operation and maintenance of LBNL SRT truck fleet, ensure that vehicles, drivers and material handlers comply with relevant ES&H rules, regulations, and laws; maintenance of driver qualifications; generation and reporting of operational information and data. Work with appropriate entities to make sure equipment conforms to safety laws, regulations, and rules and that drivers and material handlers are adequately trained and aware of their responsibilities.  

 

What You Will Do:

  • Supervision of SRT staff including guidance for safe and effective operation of the equipment and vehicles; responsible for hiring, training, evaluation, and discipline of staff; responsible for timely correction of problems in providing Receiving and delivery services.  Oversees day to day operation of the delivery fleet ensuring vehicles are available and the drivers and material handlers maintain schedules. Ensure that all material passing through Central Receiving is properly documented and addressed per applicable LBNL and DOE requirements.  Ensures that all high value (>$5K), and/or sensitive property arriving at LBNL is bar-coded per DOE requirements. Investigates customer inquiries and acts as a prime resource person between Purchasing, Accounts Payable and Laboratory users. Maintain good working relationships with unions. 
  • Scheduling and routing of Transportation operation, both on-site and off-site; coordination and scheduling of special services; scheduling of drivers; interface with off site locations for special delivery/pickups.  Collect and analyze information to determine need for changes in existing routes and requirements for new routes.
  • Collecting operational data for the unit, maintaining equipment, driver and material handler qualifications and safety records in compliance with law, rules, and regulations. Provide functional reports to Facilities management, track SRT budget in FMS.
  • Oversight of condition and maintenance of Transportation vehicles, working through LBNL Fleet Operations and outside entities as appropriate to assure that the fleet has a high percentage of in-service units.  Responsible for providing input for upgrades of vehicles to meet Laboratories safety and ergonomic standards. 
  • Safety assurance and training: works with appropriate entities to make sure equipment conforms to safety laws, regulations, and rules and that drivers and material handlers are adequately trained and aware of their responsibilities.
  • Managing the overall SRT safety program.  This includes conduction of weekly safety meetings. Implement plans to improve the safety environment.  Perform observations and go on deliveries with staff to observe the operational environment to ensure overall safe operation.  Work with EH&S on safety issues and improvements. 
  • Perform all work safely and with consideration to the protection of the environment. Be familiar with the Regulations and Procedures Manual (Pub201), particularly Section 7.00 (Health and Safety); and the Health and Safety Manual (Pub3000). Understand and follow all applicable EH&S rules, regulations, and standards in planning and carrying out your work. Report all unusual occurrences to your immediate supervisor; i.e. instances involving personal injury, safety, property damage, fires, environmental pollution, or significant operational disruptions.
  • Ensure that all appropriate EH&S training is completed within 6 months of new assignments; ensure that retraining is done as required.

  • May serve as a member of an interview panel within the Division.

 

What is Required:

  • Must possess substantial experience in shipping, receiving and transportation operations. 
  • The ability to provide first line supervision to a diverse group of full time and contract truck drivers, material handlers, mail room and shippers. 
  • Must have significant lead or supervisory experience along with knowledge of principles and practices of vehicle operation, and maintenance. 
  • Have substantial experience operating commercial carrying capacity.  
  • Must have and maintain knowledge of pertinent DMV laws and regulations. 
  • Must have and keep current knowledge of general ES&H requirements that pertain to vehicle operation and maintenance.
  • Possess working knowledge of personal computers and be familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel. 
  • Effective oral and written communication skills. 

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of LBNL RPM.
  • Emergency response training.
  • Class A driver’s license with hazardous material endorsement.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
